The Challenge

by Kim Iverson Headlee

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB
The gauntlet is thrown. One must die. Refusal is not an option.
Arthur the High King of Breatein has fallen captive of a longtime enemy, the Saxon warrior-princess Camilla, who lusts to avenge the death of her betrothed at Gyan’s hands and will stop at nothing, even the black arts, to achieve her goal. Because Gyan and Arthur have grown estranged, she fears that Arthur may side with Camilla and make her his new queen.
To meet Camilla’s challenge, Gyan must face all her demons—public as well as private.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT

The guard drew a long breath. “Your Majesty, it is time.”

Time to face all my demons, private as well as public.

At her nod, he returned to his post outside—a mite reluctantly, she observed.

“Any last advice?” she asked Merlin at the tent’s entrance. She barked a mirthless laugh. “How does one fight a demon?”

“You must not forget your shield.”

She felt her eyebrows rise. “You know I am no novice warrior.”

“I am not talking of wood and metal, Your Majesty.”

AUTHOR Bio and Links

Kim Headlee lives on a farm in southwestern Virginia with her family, cats, goats, Great Pyrenees goat guards, and assorted wildlife. People and creatures come and go, but the cave and the 250-year-old house ruins—the latter having been occupied as recently as the mid-twentieth century—seem to be sticking around for a while yet.

Kim is a Seattle native and a direct descendent of twentieth-century Russian nobility. Her grandmother was a childhood friend of the doomed Grand Duchess Anastasia, and the romantic yet tragic story of how Babushka escaped Communist Russia with the aid of her American husband will most certainly one day fuel one of Kim’s novels. Another novel in the queue will involve her husband’s ancestor, the seventh-century proto-Viking king of the Swedish colony in Russia.

For the time being, however, Kim has plenty of work to do in creating her projected 8-book Arthurian series, The Dragon’s Dove Chronicles, and other novels clamoring for attention. She has been a published novelist since 1999, beginning with the original editions of Dawnflight (Sonnet Books, Simon & Schuster) and Liberty (writing as Kimberly Iverson, HQN Books, Harlequin).

About the Book:
The story of otherworldly Blighted Basin continues in THE TWISTING...

In a valley hidden from the rest of Victorian England, Annmar Masterson has found friendship and acceptance at Wellspring farm. But as her recently discovered magical abilities grow, unstoppable crop-eating pests drive her new home to the brink of collapse.

Shapeshifter Daeryn Darkcoat's heart pulls toward Annmar, but duty comes first. With harvests across the Farmlands shire facing destruction, the predator guard scrambles for new solutions, calling upon the ingenuity of animal shifters, mechanics and growers alike.

Desperation drives landowners to utilize prototype machines, heedless of the threat to their way of life. As the danger mounts, Annmar's knowledge of Outside ways—and her magic—might be more important than anyone realizes.

Weaving steampunk engines and a land of wild magic with a coming-of-age romance, this sequel to THE UNRAVELING and second volume in THE LUMINATED THREADS whisks readers off on another spellbinding adventure.

Excerpt:

Annmar scrunched back into her pillow. This wasn’t a cat. The face was too pointed, never mind the sleek body three times as long as it was tall. Yet when she looked into its face, the familiar eyes belonged to…

“Daeryn?”

Eyes squinting, the animal’s ears pressed flat. Its head sank, giving a little jerk up and down.

Had he…nodded? “That is you.” Daeryn. This was a polecat. Her drawings had been correct, but not the same as seeing one uninjured, acting normal. Or as normal as a polecat in someone’s bed would act.

She pressed her fingertips to her temples. Oh, Lord, just stop thinking already. But her head didn’t hurt, her vision wasn’t cloudy, and neither were her thoughts. She lowered her hands and looked around to confirm they were alone before fixing her gaze on…him. “What are you doing in my room?”

His shoulders lifted.

That was a shrug. He half-crouched and jumped to the foot of the bed, then to the floor, all before she knew that’s what he had in mind. He disappeared behind the end of her bedstead.

She half-sat up, and as she started swinging her legs around, a hand pulled down the extra quilt that hung on the end of her bed. Annmar gasped and scooted under her covers. A moment later, Daeryn’s tousled brown hair came into view. The quilt swung through the air, and he stood, the fabric draped over his shoulders and held closed in the front.

He squinted at her, his expression the same as the polecat’s, looking very sleepy. “Sorry,” he muttered. “Didn’t mean to surprise you.”

What was she supposed to say to that? He’d been in her room. Sleeping in her room. In her bed! Oh, Lord, what would Mother… Nothing. Mother wasn’t around to worry about anymore, as Mary Clare had pointed out. Annmar had no one to answer to, Blighted Basin society included. Their lack of rules completely befuddled her. How did these people function?

Still. This was highly improper. She glared at him, and he seemed to shrink beneath the quilt, drawing it closer to his body. He was likely naked.

She heated, the blush running from her chest up over her face and…down. Thinking of it just brought on more heat. Mercy, in her bed. Had he been…

“You…uh, you haven’t been in…here as…” She swallowed.

His eyes widened, and he shook his head vehemently. “Only as a polecat.” He took a step back. “I wouldn’t do that… Not to you.” He turned and walked to the door. “I’ll leave.”

Yes, he most certainly was naked under there, and a part of her was curious. She was nineteen, a grown woman. Her first look at him had been brief—she swallowed—but good. “Hold on a minute,” she gasped.

He paused in the open doorway and half-turned to face her.

“I don’t understand what you’re doing in my room.”

“Sleeping here.”

“Why?”

His brows and shoulders lifted at the same time. He looked as confused as she felt when he stepped out and closed the door.

Phobic by Cortney Pearson | Day 12 | Monster Mash Book Blitz Countdown

Fifteen-year-old Piper Crenshaw knows her house is strange. As if never needing repairs since 1875, or lights flickering in response to things she says, aren’t creepy enough, it’s also the place where her mother committed murder.

To prove she’s not afraid of where she lives, Piper opens a forbidden door and soon after begins to witness a string of flashbacks—including a love affair between two young servants. Not only did these servants used to live in a set of rooms just down the hall from her bedroom, but they happen to be hiding a deadly secret.

This secret is pulling Piper deeper into not only their story, but also her house. To sever her link to it, she must unravel the clues in the flashbacks and uncover the truth about her mother’s crime before becoming a part of her house for good.

Open the door to this striking, unstoppable mystery, but remember: sometimes a house…isn’t just a house.

“Brought you something,” he says, removing a hand from his pocket. Clark Kent’s head
pokes out of the top of Todd’s fist. A laugh escapes me.

“You brought me Superman?” I take the head-on-a-stick candy dispenser and stare at the large S on Clark’s big blue chest.

Todd leans against the bed rail. “You know. Just in case you ever decide to jump out a

window again.”

------------------------

“I guess a direct approach would probably have worked better,” he says. Then he balls his hands into fists and taps them at his knees. “I have the biggest crush on you. There. I said it.”

“You—you do?” This is absurd. And yet I’m ravenous inside. It’s a challenge to concentrate on anything but him, and I want nothing more than for him to keep talking.

No Way Out: SIN (BOOK ONE)
SIN
No Way Out Serial Series; Book 1
86 pages
Published by: Booktrope Editions
Published: October 15, 2015

Blurb:
I’m called Sin. People think there’s a reason for my name, and they might be right.

Most of us think we live in a world that runs on truth, politics, and laws. We don’t. We live in a world full of lies and deceit. That’s why some of us are here in the town of Chipley. Two hundred prisoners and Reese. Sweet, innocent Reese, who was taken and held captive in a shed for three years by my father.

Releasing her is dangerous, but I have to.

She’ll think she’s being saved. She’ll think she’s getting a second chance. She’ll think she’s finding a speck of light in the darkness her world has become.

But the light reveals what the darkness has concealed. And it isn't pretty.

In Shari J. Ryan’s Psychological Thriller, you’ll be left questioning the definition of truth.

**This is a serial novel, which means it is part one of many. THIS IS NOT A STAND-ALONE novel. There will be a cliffhanger. But never fear book 2 will be out soon.**

Excerpt:

A loud flutter sounds from the sky, and I look to see if there is a plane up above, wondering where it's coming from and where it's going. The right direction might point us toward a nearby city. Regardless, there's an aircraft, which means Sin and I aren't completely lost in the middle of nowhere. Not as it seems anyway.  A helicopter finally appears on the horizon behind us, and heads in the direction we're walking. The sound of the propellers biting at the wind becomes painfully loud as it flies over our head, and the rush of air nearly knocks me over. I can't help but wonder why it's flying so low over this town.
"Bad timing," Sin says. He stops suddenly and drags me off the path and behind one of the sheds where no one can see us. Over here, I see trees in the distance. They're the first trees I've seen—maybe that means there's a road on the other side of them.
"Should we go that way?" I ask, pointing toward the green blur of leaves.
"No. That's not the right way," he says. Sin squats down, pulling me down with him until I'm resting on my knees. "Listen. In the next few minutes, you might see things that scare you, and when you see what I'm talking about, I'm going to need you to remain calm."
"I am calm." Not necessarily inside, but I'm good at pretending.
"I know you are easily excitable, and I can understand why, but right now, it's important that we stay calm." He places his hands on my shoulders and looks me in the eyes. "Do you understand?"
My skin tingles beneath his touch, even separated by the thin material of my shirt. "Please tell me what's going on."
He nods his head and looks away from me. "We left the safe area. The shed and the basement—those are safe zones, meant for the caretakers. Chipley is an isolated town, imprisoning many people from the outside. Including us."
"Isolated?" Imprisoning… Care takers?
"There's no way out. Not that I have found yet. We're surrounded by an electrified wall." Every piece of hope I had developed over the past twenty-four hours has shattered into a pile of dread. "I don't know if we'll make it out, but we're damn well going to try. And this might be the only way."
"What is the reason we are confined in this town?" I ask, unsure if I want to know the truth.
"You and I are the only two people who don't have a reason to be here. So, I can't answer that." There's no reason for why I was taken. There's no reason for why I'm confined to some compound of a town.
"And there's no reason for why you are suddenly so kind to me… I don't understand any of this, Sin. And I most definitely don't understand you." My breaths shudder as I try to compose my anger, sadness, and fear. "You've been so mean to me, but then there are moments like now, where you're nice. Why?"
"I'm angry," he says through a growl. "Your existence here has made this more complicated than it once was for me. I need to protect you. And for that, part of me feels resentment. However, the other part of me feels deeply connected to you, and for that reason…I can't fully resent you."
"I didn't ask for this," I tell him. "And you don't need to make me your problem."
"It's too late," he says as his hand cups around my cheek. Gentler than I thought capable, he presses his lips against my forehead and pulls me in against his chest. Again, I hear his heart beating—the comforting sound of not being alone. Warmth covers my body from the roots of my hair to the tips of my toes. I hate how he makes me feel so many different things at the same time. "Reese, I will do what I can to keep you safe."
"Safe from what?"
Before he has a chance to either ignore my question or answer me, I hear his name called again. "Sin," the voice shouts in a whisper. I glance over Sin's shoulder, seeing that man with the blanket again. JJ. He's limping toward us with a paper bag. Food? I pull out of sin's arms and take a few steps toward the man. I'm starving.
"Is that food?" I ask.
"Reese, no!" Sin shouts.

Ready for some great interview questions?

5- Is there a message you would like readers to get out of this book? What is it?
A couple of things readers should be able to take away from this story are that all of us can grow beyond how we see ourselves in the mirror. Another important take away would be that we are under the attack of a persistent enemy who will stop at nothing to destroy us.

Snippet Time!

Ten minutes later the diving officer on the Great Wall announced they were at periscope depth. The captain of the Great Wall slid the periscope up until it just barely broke the surface. He found the Bien Hoa right where he thought it would be. It just wasn't doing what he thought it would be doing.
On the bow of the boat was the only white man he could see on the whole boat. He was wearing a long sleeved white linen shirt and a floppy hat to protect him from the brutal tropical sun. The man appeared to be struggling with whatever was on the end of his line. It was apparent to the Chinese submarine captain that the man on the Bien Hoa was quite obviously an amateur fisherman.
The captain watched his moves and determined that today might have actually been his first attempt at fishing. He adjusted the focus a bit tighter on the periscope and could see the man's face.  Even at this distance he could tell that it didn't matter if the man actually landed the fish or not.  The smile on the man's face meant he would remember today's experience for the rest of his life.
From what the Great Wall's captain could see, most of the crew of the Bien Hoa was offering the neophyte fisherman pointers on how to best land his catch. It was amusing as the crew would give him contradicting advice and he would dutifully try and follow their instructions.
Not being well known by his crew for his sense of humor, the sub captain laughed. Several nearby crewmen glanced warily in his direction. He had grown up in a fishing village himself and truly missed that amazing connection with the sea that only a true fisherman understands.
“Do you need a firing solution sir?” asked his rather impatient weapons officer.
Still laughing, the captain responded, “No, not yet, let's let them catch their dinner in peace. Put us back on the bottom as quietly as we came up.”
The Chinese submarine began her slow silent descent back into the depths with her captain remembering a simpler life long ago, and still chuckling.
