King Peso
by Carmen Amato

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Police Procedural Mystery
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

KING PESO is the fourth book in the sensational Detective Emilia Cruz mystery series recently optioned for both television and film. Emilia is the first female police detective in Acapulco, where Mexican drug cartels battle for control and politicians are bought with blood money.

Three cops are murdered, execution style. Emilia worked with them all.

Her partner’s wife is killed in a home invasion. Was he the real target?

Is Emilia the next?

She hopes to be assigned to a task force to investigate the killings, but is instead directed to a new police unit championed by Acapulco’s ambitious mayor and overseen by a shady union strongman. But when Emilia stumbles upon a falsified report, she will conduct a private investigation, even as another murder victim carries a stark message for her.

Home is no refuge for Emilia; hotel manager Kurt Rucker has a shocking secret that could tear their relationship apart.

Unexpected help comes from a frightened attorney and a famous movie star, but each new clue to the murders unravels the one before. Meanwhile, Emilia’s ongoing hunt for a missing girl, a continuing series subplot, leads to the infamous El Pharaoh casino, a place she knows only too well.

What do a casino and a cop killer have in common? Emilia bets on her partner, but his gamble could cost both their lives.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
“Are you here to play roulette, Detective Cruz?” Duarte Ochoa asked. “You don’t have any chips.”
“No,” Emilia said. “Just the slots.”
Obregon licked his lips. “Detective Cruz is always a player,” he said. “Whether she admits it or not.”
Duarte Ochoa laughed and snapped his fingers. Out of nowhere, a young man in a King Tut costume appeared. He opened a small wooden box and offered it to the casino owner. Duarte Ochoa took out a blue chip embossed with the golden logo of the casino. Five thousand pesos. Nearly a month’s salary for Emilia. Double that for Natividad.
Emilia’s gaze travelled from the chip to King Tut. Despite the costume, which included a jeweled headdress covering his forehead, she recognized Felipe Garcia. The long hair flowed over his bare shoulders and the high cheekbones were on full display.
The sporting goods store wasn’t doing so well after all. It was too bad that Felipe had to moonlight at the El Pharaoh.
She flashed him a smile of recognition but he didn’t acknowledge her. Emilia wasn’t offended; Felipe probably had to stay in character. Duarte Ochoa dismissed him with a wave and the costumed King Tut went back to his pyramid. The casino owner held the chip between his second and third fingers as if toying with it. “Red or black, Detective Cruz?”
She certainly wasn’t picking Obregon’s favorite color. “Red,” she said.
Duarte Ochoa put the chip on the felted table. The croupier announced that bets were closed and spun the wheel. The clatter of the ball bouncing inside the wheel was louder than the grinding pop music.
“Red wins,” the croupier announced.
Duarte Ochoa smiled broadly as the croupier raked a combination of colored chips to his designated spot on the table. “Do we let it ride, Detective?” he asked Emilia.
Obregon lounged against the table, watching her with that hawkish expression on his face that always made her so nervous. If he suddenly sprouted wings and talons, Emilia would not be surprised.
“It’s your money,” she said.
Duarte Ochoa let it ride.
“Red wins,” the croupier announced again.
Another bet was placed, the wheel spun, and Duarte Ochoa won a third time. The pile in front of him grew. Emilia counted at least a dozen blue chips and an equal amount of red and yellow. A year’s salary.
“If we win on red again, we’ll share it four ways,” Duarte Ochoa said. “With champagne.”
Natividad dug her fingers into Emilia’s arm.
The wheel spun again, the ball bouncing and clattering until finally settling into a numbered slot.
“Black wins,” the croupier announced.
“Que lastima,” Duarte Ochoa said as the croupier raked away all his chips. “When you are a gambler you know that tomorrow the odds will be better. I hope you ladies are not disappointed.”
Obregon let his gaze linger on Emilia. “Don’t worry about Detective Cruz, Duarte. She knows that sometimes you win.” He licked his lips. “And sometimes you lose.”
AUTHOR INTERVIEW:
Who is your intended audience and why should they read your book?
First thanks for having me and introducing your readers to the Detective Emilia Cruz mystery series. As the first female police detective in Acapulco, Emilia is up against not only the drug cartels but Mexico’s culture of machismo. But as I always say, she can take the heat.
KING PESO is the 4th mystery in the Detective Emilia Cruz series. There’s a cop killer on the loose in Acapulco and Emilia has worked with all of the victims. So is she next? But as usual in the Detective Emilia Cruz series, nothing is what it seems.
The Detective Emilia Cruz series is for those who love fast-moving police procedural mysteries. The books are authentic to both the genre and contemporary Mexico. Expect tough language, a street view of crime, and a sprinkling of Spanish words and Mexican food. The books are not cozy mysteries.
Tell us a little bit about your cover art. Who designed it? Why did you go with that particular design?
The covers for the Detective Emilia Cruz series, including KING PESO, are by Washington DC-based artist and illustrator Matt Chase. They are bold, colorful, and unique, and have garnered a lot of attention.
I stumbled upon Matt’s artwork on a graphic design website, found his own website and immediately saw the fresh, edgy vibe I was looking for.
When Matt and I first discussed the concept, I told him I wanted the sun-drenched colors of Mexico and sent him pictures of Mexican cities filled with colorful stucco houses. The covers of most mystery novels have dark, moody colors. I wanted the series to stand out and reflect Mexico without looking cliché.
He came up with the overall concept and each cover is a riff on it. We discuss every cover in detail. Matt is sensational to work with and gave the series a distinct style.
Who is your favorite character from your book and why?
Emilia is certainly my favorite character because she’s a very vulnerable woman in a pressure-cooker environment. She’s a survivor but her survival is never a sure thing. She’s grown tough both because of her family situation and because of the job, but there are times when she wants to have someone else shield her from all the crap she sees on the streets every day.
Many readers tell me they love the scenes when she argues with Franco Silvio, the surly senior detective who became her partner in the second book in the series, HAT DANCE. He never wanted a female partner; in fact he once vowed to destroy her. By the time we get to KING PESO, the 4th book, they have a relationship of grudging respect. But when his wife is murdered, Emilia’s partnership with him goes into a tailspin.
How about your least favorite character? What makes them less appealing to you?
I love to write scenes with Victor Obregon Sosa, head of the police union for the state of Guerrero. He’s a deliciously gray character who is a dirty cop but so clever no one can prove it. He’s corrupt and for that reason is in the Least Favorite character. The scenes between him and Emilia are often charged with sexual tension and can be very challenging to write.
Give us an interesting fun fact or a few about your book or series:
I began the Detective Emilia Cruz series after being confronted with an armed drug addict on Christmas Eve a few years ago. My family lived in Mexico City and we were attending the midnight Mass in our Catholic church when the ceremony was disrupted by a man who came in shouting incoherently and waving a gun. We were all shocked to see him make his way up the center aisle and accost our pastor, Father Richard.
Without skipping a beat, Father Richard found a few pesos and gave them to the man, who settled down. Parishioners came forward, took away the gun, and escorted the addict out of the church. Mass went on.
The incident made me realize how close Mexico’s drug war was to all of us and I wanted to show what is going on but also to offer hope for better times. That’s how the first female police detective in Acapulco came to be. Emilia Cruz is taking on murder, mayhem, and Mexico’s culture of machismo in one of the most beautiful and deadly places in the world.
What other books are similar to your own? What makes them alike?
If you like international police procedural novels by Ian Rankin (the John Rebus series), Jo Nesbo (the Harry Hole series), or Henning Mankell (the Wallander series) you’ll want to meet Emilia Cruz.
Like books by these authors, the Detective Emilia Cruz series is driven by personal relationships and motivations and to a much lesser extend, depend on forensics or technology. The vibe of this genre is dark and edgy, with plots embedded in greed and power.
How can we contact you or find out more about your books?
Every reader who subscribes to my Mystery Ahead newsletter gets a free copy of the Detective Emilia Cruz Starter Library. The Starter Library features “The Beast,” the story about how Emilia became the first female detective in Acapulco, which was first published in The Huffington Post. You’ll also get “The Angler,” the story based on a real life murder mystery, plus the first chapters of the first three Emilia Cruz novels.
Thanks so much for having me and happy reading!
All the best, Carmen
Synopsis
As this captivating cozy mystery series featuring real estate agent Sam Turner continues, a dream home turns into a crime scene when murder intrudes on an open house.
Thanks to a few sales and a self-help book on becoming a super-agent, Sam Turner is well on her way to becoming real estate royalty in Arlinda, her eccentric hometown on the Northern California coast. And after settling into her new house with her teenage son, she’s finally a homeowner, too. Sure, things aren’t perfect—for example, her sister still doesn’t know that Sam is dating her ex, police chief Bernie Aguilar—but perfect is boring. And Sam’s life is never boring.
When Sam’s boss, Everett Sweet, assigns her an open house in Arlinda’s most exclusive neighborhood, she brushes up on her super-agent tips, hoping to wow potential buyers. But there’s nothing in the manual about stumbling upon the owner’s dead body halfway through the tour. When suspicion falls on her boss, Sam and her co-workers are suddenly out of work, their real estate licenses suspended. Now, with her job on the line and a mortgage to pay, Sam will need every trick in the book to clear Everett’s name.
Author Interview
Who is your intended audience and why should they read your book?
The classic mystery enthusiast: those who like a whodunnit with a twisty plot and clues scattered in for sharp-eyed readers to spot. If they relish a little humor sprinkled in and enjoy a bit of romance, all the better – they’ll love “A Killer Location”!
How did you come up with the title of your book or series?
Sam Turner is a novice real estate agent who seems to stumble over bodies fairly regularly in the course of pursuing her livelihood, and “A Killer Location” is no exception. All the titles – including the series name, “A Home Sweet Home Mystery” – reflect her real estate training. Other titles include “Good Bones” (an industry term meaning homely on the outside, but solidly built under the skin), “Like a House on Fire,” and Death at a Fixer-Upper.”
Tell us a little bit about your cover art. Who designed it? Why did you go with that particular image/artwork?
The great team at Alibi designed the original artwork for “A Killer Location.” I love the attention to detail, right down to the curious Labradoodle. It’s colorful and fun, two qualities I try to bring to my stories.
Who is your favorite character from your book and why?
Of course I’m very fond of Sam, who as the protagonist has traits I admire: inner strength, reckless courage, a self-deprecating sense of humor, a core of warmth and caring that shows in her relationship with her son, and an instinct for ferreting out the truth. And Bernie Aguilar, her steady fella, is a stand-up guy. But I have to confess, Steve the stoned-out barber is my “guilty pleasure” favorite. I’ve known a lot of Steves in my day. And of course I love Harley the cat!
How about your least favorite character? What makes them less appealing to you?
All of my characters are flawed. But I still find them likable – even Sam’s sister Stacy, whose brittle exterior may be only skin deep. Sam’s boss, Home Sweet Home broker Everett Sweet, has an uncanny resemblance to my own boss, along with some of his more annoying idiosyncrasies – but I don’t hold that against him.
How can we contact you or find out more about your books?
On Facebook (Sarah T. Hobart) or at my website, sarahthobart.com.
What can readers who enjoy your book do to help make it successful?
Tell their friends! Social media is an especially effective way to get the word out. I know I’m always looking for a good read, especially in an established series, so I love to get recommendations from my reader friends. I’d be honored if readers did that for the Home Sweet Home series!
Do you have any tips for readers or advice for other writers trying to get published?
Don’t give up. Sounds like a cliché, but this is a tough field to break into, and persistence is your best ally. Have trusted friends and fellow writers read your work, and listen to their honest feedback. And don’t quit your day job!
THE WOVEN RING by M. D. Presley | @GoddessFish Presents #Fantasy + #Giveaway
Goddess Fish Promotions has organized a Virtual Book Blast Tour for The Woven Ring by M. D. Presley, a fantasy available now.
THE WOVEN RING
by M. D. Presley
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Fantasy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
A fantasy reimagining of the American Civil War that pits muskets against magic, massive war machines against mind readers, and glass sabers against soldiers in psychic exoskeletons.
In exile since the civil war, former spy and turncoat Marta Childress wants to quietly live out her remaining days in the West. But then her manipulative brother arrives with one final mission: Transport the daughter of a hated inventor deep into the East. Forced to decide between safely delivering the girl and assassinating the inventor, Marta is torn between ensuring peace or sparking a second civil war.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

The man waiting for her was entirely nondescript, his suit a few years old, eyes and hair a burnished brown that matched his well-trimmed mustache. He would have blended in with any crowd, just another anonymous face, but the crook in his nose gave Carmichael away. It had been two years since Marta last beheld her brother, but she recognized him instantly despite his disguise.

Her anger immediately roiled to a boil, burning away the effects of the alcohol as the perfect clarity of rage roared within her. Her fourth Breath also flared to life, begging to be released. Straightaway, Armor plans filled her head: a club to stave his skull in, claws to tear out his throat, or even the serpentine tongue that had shattered his nose all those years ago. Some part of Marta’s mind clinically noted there would be a certain symmetry to that act as her Breath again implored her to be released to wreak havoc.

The Blessed Breath remained in her chest though, Marta incapable of releasing it now. Carmichael had seen to that when last they met.

“Are you going to continue to gawp like a provincial on her first trip to town or can we conduct our business inside?”

His voice was familiar, always soft, but demanding attention. Yet there was something new to it, a further depth to his indifference Marta had not encountered before as she stepped aside to allow him entrance. If she did not acquiesce willingly, he would be forced to force her.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
Two hours later, Maëlle couldn’t believe she was still sitting in the hospital parking lot in a dark section hidden away with Quinn.
“Quinn, I don’t understand all of this secrecy.”
“I have to take precautions; it could be that we were followed.”
“Are you serious? Or just crazy?”
Quinn glanced in the rear view mirror. “I’m not crazy. Are you…Crazy?”
Maëlle rubbed her brow. “You should know. If crazy exists, you’d the King. What the devil is really going on? Are you telling me the truth about Lucy and the baby?”
He waited for a moment and checked the mirrors again on the car. “Okay, here’s the only other information I know about Lucy. She used to come down and see me every so often. She was messing around with some guy she met while she was staying in Paris.”
“Lucy lived in Paris?”
“Paris, Illinois. She said she thought the guy said that he was from Chicago but he grew up in some small town outside of New Orleans.  Anyway the guy was worse than I’d ever been to her.”
“Hmm, worse than you Quinn. The guy must have been a real shit.”
“Yeah, he was domineering, controlling and abusive.  He exerted a lot of control over Lucy. That’s why every so often she would run down to Mexico and hide out with me for a few weeks.
He laughed out a bitter laugh. “Can you believe it? I’m the one who told Lucy this guy was a user stringing her along. He wouldn’t marry her. She wouldn’t listen to me. She said he’d promised to marry her. Something I’d never do.  She was a girl after all. A girl who wanted the ring and that marriage stuff like the fairy tale.”
A charged silence fell over them.
