Voice for the Silent Fathers
by Eddie K. Wright

GENRE: Memoir

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
In his memoir, Eddie shares his story of becoming a father at 18 years old who realized his son was showing ‘stereotypical’ signs of being gay while still in diapers. Spending most of his adult life engulfed in the street gangster/hip-hop culture where this subject was not only hushed but deeply frowned upon, he gives us the voice for what’s been kept silent for far too long, confronting almost every aspect of this taboo topic. It took years for him to silently accept his son’s homosexuality himself, regardless of all the signs. When his son was five years old, his favorite color was pink and there was nothing Dad could do about it. By the age of fourteen; he was an internet sensation, dancing on YouTube building his fan base to guarantee his success when performing as a drag queen a few years later. Eddie addresses the questions most are scared to ask; Was there anything I could do to stop my son’s homosexuality? When did I know my son was gay? What made him that way? Parents will find comfort in reading that Eddie admits that his son’s feminine behaviors embarrassed him and he seriously contemplated abandonment, a choice that too many fathers feel they have to choose.
He shares witnessing the desperation in the eyes of fathers, from all walks of life, who have pulled him aside, away from listening ears wanting to know the answers to these frequently asked questions, agonizing the possibilities that their son might be gay.
EXCERPT:
Chapter Two Excerpt:
…”As soon as I laid eyes on him, instinctively I knew. His tan skin, dark brown eyes, and beautiful smile made me understand why everyone said we were related, but at eighteen years old with my whole life ahead of me, I thought I was too young to be a father and deep down I knew I wasn't ready for that kind of responsibility.
My angel of a mother, who always stood by me through thick and thin, right or wrong, supported me but stayed neutral between myself and Jennifer. She always had a loving spirit for everyone. She's like a second mother to all of my friends growing up. So when she walked in the house to find me with a four-month-old smiling baby Drew, sitting together on the living room couch, she changed into Grandmother mode right on the spot, accepting Drew with open arms and a loving heart.
"Why hello gorgeous!" she said placing her purse on the chair then picking up Drew, carefully holding him close beaming her big grandmotherly smile which Drew reflected right back. They smiled at each other as he received a warm hug and a barrage of kisses.
Drew was an adorably cute baby; I'm not just saying that because he's mine either. He lit up any room and every person that came into contact with him couldn't help but smile. He was a beautiful child.”…
AUTHOR INTERVIEW:
1. Who is your intended audience and why should they read your book?
I started writing "Voice For The Silent Fathers" with the intentions for all the gay and lesbian people of the world to read and understand what it's like for a father, struggling to accept his son's homosexuality.  Acceptance from a father was unheard of and some what still is since I'm the first father to ever write about this taboo topic.
I also wanted the mothers to understand our struggle in not having the answers to why it was so difficult to just accept our child for who they are.  Couples get divorces, families are broken up, I've heard stories of it getting dangerously ugly when it came to accepting homosexuality.
I had a macho, street gangster mentality, that wasn't trying to hear having a gay son.  But when they say true love concurs all...yeah that's real. So that's why everyone should read "Voice For The Silent Fathers" because everyone has s family or friend that's dealing with this topic.
2. How did you come up with the title of your book or series?
The title was self-explained.  Being the first father to write about a topic that needs to be discussed comes with a lot of responsibility and a fathers voice is of utmost importance to the shaping of our child's lives.  People are always wondering what a father is thinking and feeling once he finds out his son is gay. I give a voice from a fathers perspective.
3. Tell us a little bit about your cover art.  Who designed it? Why did you go with that particular image/artwork?
I felt that it was important that I be on the cover as a powerful statement to show that I'm not ashamed of having a son that's gay.  Shirl Tyner designed the cover and sent me different poses. I took the picture in the gym of USP Canaan, and picked that pose because I thought it reflected the contemplative struggle we as fathers deal with.
4. Who is your favorite character from your book and why?
My mother is my favorite character.  She's always been the foundation of our family, showing  and proving who the real original gangster is. She practices unconditional love to the fullest. She's the type of mother that everyone wants in their corner when dealing with the difficulties of life.
5. Do you have any unique talents or hobbies?
I think the way I publicly speak is a unique talent.  Normally it's up at the chapel in a spiritual group where I'm explaining the Universal laws of attraction, the power of our thoughts and how we create our life experiences with God's loving gift of choice.  This may not sound too unique, but when that audience is about 20 convicts, most with multiple life sentences, it takes a unique speaking talent to get them to listen and accept responsibility for where we currently find ourselves and for the conditions of our future experiences, according to our current mode of thinking.  Those sessions do get intense and exciting.
6. How can we contact you or find out more about your books?
You can find more about me and my books at www.Eddiekwright.com, www.voiceforthesilentfathers.com and www.gangsterturnedgurupresents.com.  You can also write me old school style by finding all my information on my site.
7. What can we expect from you in the future?
You can expect the Gangster Turned Guru Presents series.  I have "The Evolution of a Gangster Turned Guru," coming out in the beginning of 2019.  I have a Parenting from Prison Handbook, and other spiritual self-help books in the making.
8. What can readers who enjoy your book do to help make it successful?
Spread the word and hold meaningful conversations about the importance of acceptance.  The suicide rate is the highest among homosexual teens. I think fathers that don't show support and acceptance are a big cause for that high rate.
Fathers accepting their gay children needs to be normalized.  I feel "Voice for the Silent Fathers" helps that cause, so spread the word to who you can.
9. Do you have any tips for readers or advice for other writers trying to get published?
Don't give up.  Continue to write, write, write, and know that you can turn any obstacle into an opportunity.  I'm behind the walls of a maximum federal penitentiary. My faith, trust and belief of God and the Universal laws left no doubt that one day I would get published and it happen.  God is real! So whatever condition you find yourself in, just keep the positive faith and follow the path of least resistance. Allow God to work for you by staying optimistic in your thoughts, words, and actions. Before you know it, things will start to fall into place.
10. Is there anything else you'd like to say?
I just want to thank you for the support.  I'm sure Voice for the Silent Fathers will take the reader on an emotional roller coaster as a good story should.  You'll hate me, then love me, laugh and cry but in the end… You’ll be a family friend.
Thanks again and I hope to hear from my new friends soon!
Thoughts from a reader:
These delicate father son issues, so implicitly captured in Eddie's writings, are relevant to a broad spectrum of societal issues beyond the "No son of mine" father of a gay man experience. In fact, the book gets to the real substance of human conflict which is our inability to accept and appreciate difference. The key word here is appreciation. The book offers an opportunity to consider acceptance in a way that extends grace, honor, support and recognition. When we are ungrateful, we are critical, blaming, and we use forms of rejection. Eddie’s experience of coming to the acceptance of his son provides hope for healing; a more practical response to conflict that allows dignity, respect and honor which overcomes criticism, blame, bigotry, and ultimately rejection. ~G. Holmes~
