CHARACTER INTERVIEW:

Gia Morelli from Murder Made to Order, All-Day Breakfast Café Mysteries #2

*What is your current state of mind?

Confused! I relocated to Florida after my scamming, cheating ex-husband was convicted of fraud, among other things, and most of my “friends” abandoned me. I figured a new start was the way to go, so I bought a small house on the outskirts of the Ocala National Forest and opened the All-Day Breakfast Café with the help of my best friend, Savannah. As much as I love the café and living so close to Savannah again, and all of the new friends I’ve made, and my new puppy, Thor, I can’t help feeling homesick. Things in Florida are different from New York. I love the small town of Boggy Creek, but I miss the comfort of what still feels like home. Plus, I’m having a tough time getting used to things like alligators, poisonous snakes, and now tornados! But now that someone is trying to close my café, all I want to do is stay and fight for my dream.

*What do you feel most passionately about?

I feel very passionately that women should stand up for themselves. I think we sometimes get so lost in taking care of others and doing what everyone else needs, that we lose sight of what we need. I think it’s important to take the time to figure out what our needs are and make sure we take care of ourselves. It’s very easy to fall into the pit of neglecting ourselves while allowing others to take advantage of us.

*What you do/will like best about the other main character(s)?

Savannah is the best friend anyone could ever have. She is as loyal as they come. There’s nothing in the world she wouldn’t do for me, and there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for her. But lately, it seems I’ve been messing that up. Not on purpose, of course, but…well…I did hurt her. Now I am on course to earning her forgiveness. Because that is another of Savannah’s awesome traits; she’s very forgiving.

*What annoys you? What makes you laugh?

Laziness annoys me. I have no patience or tolerance for laziness. Thor makes me laugh. I can’t even believe Savannah had to drag me practically kicking and screaming to the shelter to pick out a puppy. Now, I could just sit and watch Thor bounce around the yard for hours on end—as long as there are no critters around.

*What is the best thing that ever happened to you? The worst?

I’ll start with what I thought was the worst thing that ever happened to me; finding out my (now ex) husband was not only scamming his clients out of millions of dollars but concealing a long line of mistresses. Then I found him dead in the dumpster behind my café on opening day. Suddenly, the things he put me through didn’t seem quite as bad in comparison. Despite being angry beyond belief with Bradley, I wouldn’t have wished that on him.
As for the best thing that ever happened… Despite the occasional feeling of being homesick, I think moving to Boggy Creek is the best thing that ever happened to me. I love living close to Savannah. The All-Day Breakfast Café is my dream come true. I don’t know how I ever lived without Thor! And I’ve made some amazing new friends, one in particular I’m hoping might become something more.

*What early event shaped you the most?

The day I graduated high school, my father threw me out. That event pushed me to become strong, independent, and taught me to take care of myself. Unfortunately, I lost sight of that while I was with Bradley. I’m happy to say I’ve regained some of that inner strength.

*If you could go back in time for one day, where would you go?

My mom passed away when I was young. I don’t remember her well, but I’ve seen pictures, and she seemed to love me very much. If I could, I would go back and spend one day with my mom.

*What do you consider your greatest achievement?

The All-Day Breakfast Café is definitely my greatest achievement. At the time I was setting it up, I was also going through the darkest period of my life. My husband was on trial, all of my so-called friends abandoned me (except for Savannah). Some thought I was guilty, others feared for their safety once the death threats started coming in. But through it all, setting up my café kept me sane. I think we tend to appreciate the things we’ve had to work the hardest for the most.

Gia is considering hanging up her apron and going back to New York, but before she gives up on her dream, she discovers something shocking in the local swamp: Marcia Steers, dead in the water.
