OFFed Stage Left
by Joanne Sydney Lessner

This was a fun story to get into too. The writing was great the plot was good. The characters were likable. A lot of action in this story. ~Books, Dreams, Life

This was a fun, easy read. The pace is quick and the idea of Sousacal is unique.

Synopsis

There’s one role you don’t want a callback for: Prime Suspect. Aspiring actress Isobel Spice lands her first regional theater job, playing a supporting role and understudying the lead in Sousacal: The Life and Times of John Philip Sousa. A series of minor backstage accidents culminates in the suspicious death of the leading lady on opening night. When Isobel takes over the role, her mastery of the material makes her more suspect than savior, and she realizes the only way to clear her name is to discover the identity of the murderer—before he or she strikes again.

My Thoughts

I have been a fan of theater ever since I played the role of nurse in my elementary school's sixth grade production of Romo and Juliet. So of course, I found the combination of theater and mystery irresistible in a book.

OFFed Stage Left was my first introduction to Isobel Spice who is an aspiring actress and apparently a part-time amateur sleuth. She was cast in a supporting role and as an understudying in a very off Broadway musical production (Albany, New York).

I took a theater appreciation course at university - in an area with a very strong regional theater presence. I was especially impressed with the level of detail Joanne Sydney Lessner included in the book with regard to theater productions.

The regional theater was not simply a location for the murder to take place. With lots of humor, Lessner deftly weaved the ins-and-outs of a production - the jobs, the personalities, the technical terms, and the backstage drama - into a fast-paced mystery that doesn't disappoint. This blending will get theater newbies up to speed and delight theater fans.

OFFed Stage Left is the fourth book in the Isobel Spice series. It reads well as a stand-alone. I was able to into series with relative ease. I look forward to going back and reading the first three books that I missed.

In all honesty, I would kind of like to see "Sousacal: The Life and Times of John Philip Sousa." One time. For free. In his opening night review of Sousacal, theater critic Roman Fried referenced "Elephant! The Musical" saying, "With a Fried rating of 5 Elephants (so bad it's brilliant), this excerpted masterpiece remains the benchmark for unintentionally hilarious musicalizations of unsuitable subject matter." He gave "Sousacal" a 4.5 Elephants.

I was provided an opportunity to read this book as an advanced reader copy in return for a fair and honest review.

About The Author

Writer, singer, and actor Joanne Sydney Lessner draws on her own experiences pursuing a performing career in New York City for her acclaimed Isobel Spice Mysteries: THE TEMPORARY DETECTIVE, BAD PUBLICITY, AND JUSTICE FOR SOME, and OFFED STAGE LEFT. With humor and a bit of romance, Isobel juggles auditions and temp jobs, solving murders along the way, while Joanne’s inside knowledge provides a window into the realities of breaking into show business (as well as a forum to share every humiliating audition experience she and her friends ever had.) Joanne’s debut novel, PANDORA’S BOTTLE, was inspired by the true story of the world’s most expensive bottle of wine and was named one of the top five books of 2010 by Paperback Dolls. With her husband, composer/conductor Joshua Rosenblum, she has co-authored several musicals, including the cult hit FERMAT’S LAST TANGO and EINSTEIN’S DREAMS, based on the celebrated novel by Alan Lightman. Her play, CRITICAL MASS, received its Off Broadway premiere in October 2010. Joanne is also a regular contributor to OPERA NEWS and a graduate of Yale University.
