Author Interview

  1. Who is your intended audience and why should they read your book?
I write cozy mysteries designed to keep readers up all night. I write the kind of book that makes bedtime, an airplane trip or an afternoon in the hammock fly by. Lately, my books are a humorous escape into the sleepy town of Bohemian Lake, where quirky characters confront murderers, ghosts, and whacky old ladies, but also deal with regular life challenges like jobs, renovations, and annoying family gatherings.

  1. How did you come up with the title of your book or series?
Well, since the book is a Halloween themed tale, I needed something that spoke to the season but ‘The Haunted House’ seemed overdone. The original name was Cookies, Corsets & the Deadly Haunt. Deadly Haunt being the name of the Halloween fundraising ball that Juniper and Pike are planning. The first part was named after the bakery/vintage dress shop across the road that belongs to the main character’s best friend. I decided to change the Corsets to Corpses to represent the dead bodies that keep turning up.

  1. Tell us a little bit about your cover art. Who designed it? Why did you go with that particular image?
This cover to me was all about the Halloween spirit. Mariah Sinclair designed it along with all of my cozy mystery titles so far. I love all five of the covers she’s done for me, but Cookies, Corpses & the Deadly Haunt is my absolute favorite. It was also the easiest. I just told her about the book and what the characters looked like and hocus pocus, it appeared. I am in awe of how it turned out, everything from the haunted Doctor’s Mansion to the three main characters, Juniper, Jack & Pike. She really caught the essence of the story.

  1. Give us an interesting fun fact or a few about your book or series:
What other books are similar to your own?  What makes them alike?
I enjoy mixing facts with fiction. For example, the Doctor’s Mansion is actually based on my own house. A three story second empire Victorian built the same year, minus the widows walk, the hidden tunnel and the murder. Although, one of the previous owners did die in an unfortunate accident while attempting to excavate the hill out back. And while my books have unique elements like this, I think my story lines are similar to many other small town cozies out there. I think that’s what makes them great. Cozy mystery books follow a certain formula and the readers expect it. The readers love to solve puzzles. They get caught up in mystery and suspense, but instead of blood, and gore, they want outlandish humor that makes the unthinkable somehow laughable. Trying to figure out “whodunit” and why before the big reveal is what they look forward to. Hell hath no fury, like a mystery reader cheated by the solve.

  2. How can we contact you or find out more about your books?

  1. What can we expect from you in the future?
The second book in the Penning Trouble series: Murder, She Slopes releases the end of November. In the meantime, I’m working on the first and second book in the Bohemian Murder Manor Series. They will release early 2018. The Vianu ladies are very special to me. They run Bohemian Lake’s Gypsy Caravan Resort and offer up themed events. Nana Vianu and her girls were the first characters I wrote about in Bohemian Lake, which is why it’s so funny that these books are the last to be released. I guess they are my babies and I’m having trouble letting go. Truth bomb: I made the mistake of setting the story aside to percolate while I finished up with my time traveling librarian last year. I have learned this technique doesn’t work for me. I’m an obsessive all-at-once kind of writer. Now, I simply spew my books out start to finish with no interruptions.

  1. Do you have any tips for readers or advice for other writers trying to get published?
My advice to writers is to keep writing. The indie author group (20booksto50K) is a great place to get information on how to publish. Create a schedule and set release dates. It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you set your mind to it. You need to have four or five books out there before you start to make an impact. All the marketing in the world is not gonna help if you’re not writing and constantly putting out more books.

  1. Is there anything else you’d like to say?
Yes, I want to say thank you to my readers and to my reviewers! It is such an honor to be able to work in a profession that I love and that is possible because people buy and read my books. It’s a dream come true.
