Honor Kills (Angelina Bonaparte Mysteries) by Nanci Rathbun is on book tour with Great Escape Virtual Book Tours and stops at Readeropolis with an author interview.

Author Interview

1. Who is your intended audience and why should they read your book?

My books tend to skew toward a female audience, but men who do read them seem to love them. Although they feature a 50-something protagonist, many women in their thirties have told me how much they like Angie.

Mysteries are the modern equivalent of a medieval morality play, where the villain is brought to justice and the universe’s balance is restored. That’s why I love mysteries and why most mystery readers do, too.  A reader who wants an entertaining story, with a thoughtful plot and engaging characters should try the series.

2. How did you come up with the title of your book or series?
I originally planned to call the first book The Snoop, but the publisher I was with at the time had another book with that title. Then I tried Snooping for the Truth, but it was too close to the other writer’s work. I asked Facebook friends and fellow writers to select a name from a list I developed, and Truth Kills was the winner. It’s been a versatile choice, since so many things can kill!

3. Tell us a little bit about your cover art. Who designed it? Why did you go with that particular image?
Nathaniel Dasco designed my current covers, and they’re really attention-grabbing! We went through several iterations of covers–he was very patient with me, because I honestly didn’t know what feeling I wanted to convey–but when I saw the current covers, I knew we had a winner. There’s a sense of menace that relates well to the word “Kills” in each title, but I don’t think it’s overwhelming or likely to get a yuck reaction.

4. Who is your favorite character from your book and why?
I love PI Angelina Bonaparte and wish I were a bit more like her. She’s stylish, fit, strong, sexy but professional, and she balances logic with compassion as she seeks justice in a world that seems very unjust. I must admit that we share a slightly snarky sense of humor.

5. How can we contact you or find out more about your books?
My website is the best place to find information about my books and read chapter one of each novel. There are also links to buy them in print, e-book and audiobook format. I’m not a voracious blogger, but readers can find some interesting posts there, like “Watch Your Mouth” and “I’m a Writer, Not a Terrorist.”
I love to hear from readers. Here’s how:

6. What can we expect from you in the future?
I have a fourth Angelina Bonaparte mystery in the works, and then I’m going to take a break and start work on a new mystery series that surfaced in my mind when I moved to Colorado. It’s a bit fuzzy, but it will be a historical mystery set in post-Civil War Colorado. The protagonist is a woman constrained by her family and marriage to an abusive man, who heads west when she learns that Colorado has granted women the right to vote (second state to do so). Research has begun on this one, and I’m excited to see how it unfolds.

7. What can readers who enjoy your book do to help make it successful?
On behalf of myself and all writers, please leave a review. Please. We’re begging you.
Reviews help other readers find our books. They help readers decide if they want to buy the book. And they are essential to get the rankings that result in attention and promotion by Amazon. Thank you in advance.

8. Do you have any tips for readers or advice for other writers trying to get published?
Approach your work as a professional and pay for the best you can afford in an editor. There are so many poorly-done books out there that getting your work edited is essential to raise you above the crowd.

Is there anything else you’d like to say?
I’m so appreciative of those who take the time to bring authors to the reading public via blogging. It’s a lot of work to manage a good blog. Thanks, Readeropolis!

Did honor force him to abandon his wife and kids? Or is he just a weasel? Six years ago, Marcy Wagner hired PI Angelina Bonaparte to find her missing husband Hank, who cleaned out their bank accounts and disappeared. Then Angie finds his obituary in an upstate newspaper. Marcy wants to know what why he abandoned her and the kids. Angie does, too! She embarks on a mission that will blow the lid off Hank’s hidden life and reveal the reasons he ran. Was he a lowdown skunk? Or did he do the honorable thing when he left? Angie follows a twisted path to the truth and discovers that it lies perilously close to her own family life.
