Waking to Black
by V.H. Luis

GENRE:   Erotic Romance

He shattered my defenses, and I was fragile to begin with…

The first time I saw Adam Black, I was between the arms of a criminal, a gun to my throat and even then, I knew I was staring at the most dangerous man in the room.

Maybe it was his confident, cerulean eyes, or the sex appeal radiating from his pores like heat waves on a scorching day, but by proximity alone he made my vision blur and my heart stammer.

The day I was nearly killed in a bank hold-up, I began to live—because of him.

Now, I’m praying for the first time in years, hoping the scars of my past, the secrets I keep, don’t interfere with my future…

“You’re too young and beautiful to be so jaded.”

The confidence he exudes is threatening. It makes me question my opinions and beliefs. My legs tremble as I take a step back.

“Giving me a compliment directly followed by an insult won’t make me agree with you.”

He closes the gap between us. The smell of his aftershave and skin surrounds me and without thinking I take a deep breath.

“Why are you under the impression I want you to agree with me?”

My eyes widen under his scrutiny. The air around us is charged and it’s hard to breathe.

“In fact, I would much rather you disagree.”

“Why?” I can’t help the genuine confusion resonating in my voice.

“I find you intriguing when you disagree with me. Not to mention, you’re incredibly attractive when you’re flustered. Your heart starts to beat faster and your breathing quickens.”

He raises his hand and presses his index finger along the curve of my neck. His words come true as my lungs struggle to keep up with the demands of my body. Adam’s lips curve into a soft smile as he trails his finger down my neck, resting it against my carotid.

My heart begins to race as a chill ripples down my body.

This man knows how his touch affects me, and he revels in the conquest. Part of me wants to deny him the satisfaction, a very small part of me.

“Do I make you nervous?” He places emphasis on the word I, his fingertips still pressed against my neck, against my pulse.

“Yes,” I whisper plainly, because I can’t manage anything else.

  1. Who is your intended audience and why should they read your book?
People who are fans of Sylvia Day’s Crossfire Series will likely enjoy the Uninhibited Trilogy. Both the hero/heroine of this trilogy are damaged like the hero/heroine of that series. Happily-ever-after is something both Evelyn and Adam will have to fight for in order to achieve—I personally love that because happiness is often not easily attained. I set out to write a passionate, angst-filled read with relatable and damaged characters who in many respects seek redemption and I think I was able to achieve this with the Uninhibited Series.

  1. How did you come up with the title of your book or series?
Originally the first book in my trilogy Waking to Black (Uninhibited #1), was titled Epiphany. However, that title seemed somewhat dull to me and it was hard to tie-in the other books of the trilogy with that title. I wanted to include Black in the book titles of the series because the hero of this trilogy is Adam Black, but at the same time I wanted to add something about the heroine’s journey as well because the series is very much about Evelyn Snowe’s path to happiness. I finally decided on Waking to Black because Evelyn does wake-up because of her association to Adam. He makes her more adventurous and she in turn makes him realize he doesn’t have it all, at least not yet.

  1. How can we contact you or find out more about your books?
You can visit my website. This tour has preoccupied much of my time so I haven’t been blogging much lately, however all updates I have will be posted on my website and if you decide to join my mailing-list (sign-up also found on my website), I will send major updates such as book release dates via email. Also, if you really want to contact me I would love to get your e-mails—again this information can be found on my website. I endeavor to answer all e-mails.

  1. What can we expect from you in the future?
I plan on publishing the remaining books of my debut trilogy: Fading to Black (Uninhibited #2) and Surrendering to Black (Uninhibited #3). Afterwards it’s my intention to continue writing and perhaps work on a new trilogy. I would love to work on a motorcycle romance trilogy. In fact, I have an idea currently which deals with three brothers and their respective love interests. I’m not sure where the future is taking me but I know writing will certainly be a big part of that future.

  1. What can readers who enjoy your book do to help make it successful?
Thank you so much for asking this, it’s very kind of you.
I’m sure this has been said before but word-of-mouth is huge as far as getting readers interested in a book. If someone enjoys my book and wants to help make it a success they can post a review on Amazon/Goodreads and if possible inform their book-loving friends. Though I’ve tried to promote my book, I’m very new to publishing. Any help is of course greatly appreciated.

  1. Is there anything else you’d like to say?
Thank you so much everyone who have read my book, reviewed it, followed the tour and supported me along the way. I appreciate and value each and every one of you. For years I contemplated publishing and mustering the courage to do so was not easy. I’m happy I finally did publish because I’ve met some great people along the way and the kind/encouraging words people have said and written about my work has really meant much to me.

***Thank you very much for hosting today. I’ve enjoyed answering these questions and very much appreciate everyone’s time and attention.

Welcome to my internet haven!
I’m a born and bred Miami Girl—and proud of it! I would wear shorts and flip-flops every day of the week if I could. Growing up in Miami, surrounded by my parent’s heritage has made me proud of my Cuban ancestry. Cafecito and a guava pastry for breakfast? Yes, please! Salsa music while I tidy the house? Of course.

If I’m not busy scribbling notes about the story pounding out of my head, I’m painting, listening to music, or spending time with the love of my life—my son. If I decide to travel, I bring the whole family (in-laws included), or at least I try to, because life is too short not to spend it with family; one of the many lessons my father taught me.

  6. What types of books do you like to read? Thanks for hosting. I hope that I win. Bernie Wallace BWallace1980(at)hotmail(d0t)com

    1. I LOVE romance books which is probably why I ended up writing romance. However, I really like fantasy books as well. When an author blends both romance/fantasy and does that well such as Jacqueline Carey, I'm in reading heaven.

  7. I believe I read somewhere you didn't intend to have 3 books in the series, that it just sorta happened. How do you know when a story is complete?

    1. Kim your questions/comments always make me smile. You really have read all the guest posts and interviews carefully and I appreciate your attention to this tour so much!

You are right, originally Waking to Black was going to be one book, however as my characters took over the story I soon realized that to show the growth necessary for Adam/Evelyn to find happily-ever-after in what I felt was an original and realistic fashion, I'd have to expand the story into a series. After coming to that realization I then thought long and hard about what I wanted to achieve in each book. When I made that decision the rest came naturally.

The goal has always been to write a story with depth that is both erotic and realistic without dragging it out. Hopefully, I've been successful. :)

Thank you so much for the question and attention. You mentioned in a previous post that you felt like you were getting to know me through this tour and the feeling is mutual.

    2. Thanks and you're welcome.
