Picked Off (A Brie Hooker Mystery)
by Linda Lovely is on book tour with Great Escape Virtual Book Tours and stops at Readeropolis with a character interview.
It’s been seven months since Brie Hooker, a vegan, moved to Udderly Kidding Dairy to live with her feisty Aunt Eva, a confirmed carnivore.
But tonight there’ll be no family feud over dinner entrees.
Udderly’s hosting a campaign fundraiser for Eva’s best friend, who hopes to be South Carolina’s next governor. The candidate’s son, a pro quarterback, is flying home for the wingding. And Brie’s eager to get a close-up view of the cute tush she’s admired on TV, even though she’s reluctantly sworn off even more tempting local beefcake.
The campaign fundraiser promises to be a huge success until a pitchfork attack turns the goat farm into a crime scene—again.
To protect her friends, Brie puts her sleuthing skills to work. Will she live long enough to find out who’s behind a vicious assault, a kidnapping, blackmail, and murder?

Interview with Dr. Howard Hooker, the father of Brie, PICKED OFF’s heroine. The professor currently heads Clemson University’s Horticultural Department. He previously taught at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, and accepted Clemson’s offer a few years back. The promotion included a bonus of living near Eva and Lilly, his twin sisters, and his daughter, Brie. Plus the move let him discard his snow shovel.
What do you feel most passionately about? Three things: family, the environment, and mystery novels. Our family is small but very tight-knit and I love all of them more than I can say. At the university, I teach courses in sustainable farming and forestry practices. Our world is fragile and I hope to pass along to students my passion for protecting the environment. Writing mystery novels is the passion that no one outside my family knows about. I love trying to puzzle out plots. Every year I use part of my vacation to attend the Writers’ Police Academy to learn more about law enforcement and forensics. When I go on car trips with my family, one of the games I instigate is picking out great places to hide criminal activities from stills to dead bodies.
What do you like best about the other main character(s)? My wife, Iris, is very smart. If you promise not to tell her, I’ll confess she’s smarter than me. She’s the attorney/prosecutor for the City of Clemson. She’s tiny but anybody who thinks she’s a pushover had better beware. My daughter, Brie, is a love—beautiful, intelligent, and has a big heart. I could list her virtues forever. I love that she’s loyal to her friends and believes in fair play. Eva, my sis, is an independent cuss and a hoot. I love Eva’s quick wit and sense of humor, even though I can be the butt of her jokes.
What annoys you? People who should know better but still trash the environment. Littering, clear-cutting land, carelessly applying chemicals that pollute the land and our streams.
What makes you laugh? My family. Also authors who write plots and characters that tickle me. Carl Hiaasen and Dave Barry are two of my favorites.
What is the best thing that ever happened to you? Have to say it’s marrying Iris, the love of my life. If I hadn’t married her, we wouldn’t have Brie.
The worst? I have to list two. The accidental death of one of my sisters and finding out my daughter was in danger. Waiting helplessly to learn if she was alive was excruciating.
What is the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to you?
It’s hard to choose when you have two older sisters, twins, who try to outdo each other in coming up with ideas to embarrass a younger brother. I think my humiliation peaked when I was twelve and my sisters passed around a picture of me at school. In the photo, taken when I was a toddler, I was buck naked.
What is your motto? If a glass is half full, it’s my job to help fill it to the brim.
What do you consider your greatest achievement? My wife and I have raised a daughter who gives us joy and makes us proud every day.

About the Author

Linda Lovely finds writing pure fiction isn’t a huge stretch given the years she’s spent penning PR and ad copy. Linda writes a blend of mystery and humor, chuckling as she plots to “disappear” the types of characters who most annoy her. Quite satisfying, plus there’s no need to pester relatives for bail. Her newest series offers goodnatured salutes to both her vegan family doctor and her cheese-addicted kin. She’s an enthusiastic Sisters in Crime member and helps organize the popular Writers’ Police Academy. When not writing or reading, Linda takes long walks with her husband, swims, gardens, and plays tennis.
