Character Interview

with Martha "Marty" Hudson

What is your current state of mind?
At the moment I'm incredibly excited to be able to start some renovations on my inherited, dilapidated, Victorian home at 221 Baker St. in San Francisco. Normally my salary as a coffee barista at the Stanford University bookstore CafĂ© is only enough to keep me in Top Ramen and keep my landlord from only hounding me every other month for back rent. But, thanks to my best friend, Irene Adler, and one of her deliciously harebrained schemes, I actually have enough money in the bank to start repairing some of the holes in the roof! You see, Irene had this brilliant (or ridiculous—you be the judge) idea to invent a fake private investigator name Sherlock Holmes. It happened last year while Irene and I were looking into the death of my great-aunt. You would be amazed how many doors get slammed in the face of two young female civilians... Doors that quickly open up for private investigators who work for a famous detective with a funny name. Only Irene's little white lie about us working for a private investigator name Sherlock Homes quickly blew up and got out of hand. Now we have actual paying clients knocking on our door wanting to give Sherlock money to solve their cases! I'd be happy to tell you all about our latest one, but I think you'd be better off reading about it for yourself in SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING DIVA.

What you do/will like best about the other main character(s)?
My absolute best friend in the entire world is Irene Adler, who is my sidekick in all harebrained schemes in my life. Or maybe I'm her sidekick? I suppose it all depends on who you're asking. I first met Irene when she and I were at the same lecture on the Stanford university campus about social media's impact on political and economic culture. I'd been crashing it. She'd been giving it. Irene is a brilliant computer prodigy, and one of the Silicon Valley's most sought after venture capitalists, who started her career at age 12 by hacking into a government mainframe. By age 14 she had a degree from MIT, and she sold her first start-up company at age 21, making her multimillionaire before she could buy a beer. Not only is Irene brilliant, she is stunningly beautiful as well. She's the type of girl that Disney princesses are modeled after… except this princess has never needed a handsome prince to "save her." Quite the opposite in fact. Irene is a go-getter who makes things happen, even if those things are creating a fake detective to complicate my life and getting the two of us into all manner of dangerous situations.

If you could go back in time for one day, where would you go?I would go back to the day that my best friend, Irene Adler, first invented the fake detective Sherlock Holmes. So many times I have wanted to jump in and stop her from telling Dr. John Watson, San Francisco's hottest, most eligible bachelor and medical examiner, that we worked for the infamous detective. Of course how we would've gotten access to the official records we needed at the time to look into my great-aunt's death without Sherlock Holmes, I have no idea. On a daily basis I still try to come up with alternatives to using our fake detective. But it seems the more I try to come up with alternatives, the more Irene enjoys creating more roles for our fake employer to fill.

What is the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to you?
I'm pretty sure that having the hot, adorable, and perfect Dr. John Watson find me passed out and face down in the mud ranks right up there with the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to me. You can read all about how that moment came to be in SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING DIVA. Yes, I'm lucky enough that there is someone actually chronicling my most embarrassing moments in novel form. Though, to be quite honest, there's a long list of such moments. I'd like to think that the scales are fairly equally balanced between brilliant and embarrassing in my life… But they might be leaning just a little bit more toward embarrassing. I'm working on that!

What is your most treasured possession?
I have to admit that while sometimes my inherited Victorian home in San Francisco is an albatross around my neck—with its broken water heater, drafty windows, holes in the roof, and all manner of other DIY nightmares—I'm actually quite attached to the place. I inherited it last year from my great-aunt Kate, who I actually never met. In fact, I never had much connection to any family members, so having this home somehow feels like a connection to family I never knew. In a way, I guess you could say that the house at 221 Baker St. is my family. So as much is she is a burden, she is equally a joy in my life. And no matter how many cases I may have to take on to fund it, I will get her restored to her original glory.

About the Book

Cozy Mystery
2nd in Series
Gemma Halliday Publishing (August 14, 2018)
Print Length: 316 pages

From #1 Kindle & New York Times bestselling author Gemma Halliday and USA Today bestselling author Kelly Rey comes a story about Sherlock Holmes, two savvy female detectives, and one chance to catch a killer and the hot Dr. Watson at the same time…

If there's one thing Martha "Marty" Hudson can't say no to, it's her best friend Irene Adler. So when Irene's little white lie about a fake detective named Sherlock Holmes turns into a real case from an actual paying client, Marty is all in. But their simple missing person case takes a deadly turn when the missing "person" ends up being a missing corpse.

Rebecca Lowery was an opera singer in life and, according to her sister, who hires the famous detective to find her, a diva with capital D. When her body goes missing after a supposedly accidental fall, Marty & Irene can think of several people who might want the diva to disappear permanently—especially if her missing body is actually hiding evidence of her murder. Is it the boyfriend with a temper and a shady record, the jealous understudy who's now stealing the show, the creepy undertaker with possible ties to the underworld, or the estranged sister herself who now inherits everything?

Marty and Irene aim to find out, even while trying to keep cool around the hot ME, Dr. Watson, and dodging questions from the Irregulars blogger, Wiggins, about the mysterious man behind the name Sherlock Holmes. Will the ladies be able to pull this one off? Or are they in over their heads…and possibly about to take their own final bows?
