Character Interview

What is your current state of mind?

Right now I’m mentally multi-tasking…I have next week’s food inventory to complete for the Windjammer restaurant that I manage in Etonville, NJ. Since it’s three pm and time for my afternoon break I’m due next door at the Etonville Little theatre to meet with my BFF Lola Tripper. She’s in the middle of her latest tadoo with the community theatre company: casting the next production of Bye, Bye, Birdie. I’m pretty good at calming her down.

What do you feel most passionately about?

I am passionate about my emerging detective skills. Lately there’s been a series of murders in Etonville and my instincts have been spot on. I’m also a little passionate about my heartthrob Police Chief Bill Thompson…!

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I love my green eyes and auburn hair that I inherited from my Irish ancestors but I’d be willing to surrender my wavy mane once humidity hits northern New Jersey where I live now. Waves turn into curls.

What you do/will like best about the other main character(s)?

I love my BFFs Lola and Carol, Pauli, my teenage tech guru when I am solving mysteries, and of course Chief Bill Thompson.

Lola is fun-loving and willing to be my wing person when I am I the midst of a murder.

Carol is owner of Snippets salon, Etonville’s rumor central, and she provides me with town gossip which sometimes helps me find a killer.

Pauli is my go-to guy for digital forensics: email hacking, facial recognition software, deep Internet searches.

And Bill…well, he’s my guy.

What is the best thing that ever happened to you? The worst?

The best and worst are related: worst was Hurricane Sandy that destroyed my home and job down the Jersey shore in 2012. But it created my best: my move to Etonville where I met great friends and my current love interest.

What is in your refrigerator right now? On your bedroom floor? On your nightstand? In your garbage can?

Refrigerator: a bottle of chardonnay wine.

Bedroom floor: the latest Cindy Collins mystery which I dropped as I drifted off to sleep last night.

Nightstand: my cell phone charger; I’d be lost without it.

Garbage can: leftover couscous that I liberated from the Windjammer restaurant for last night’s dinner. Also some moldy cheese.

Complete the following sentence: I am the kind of person who...

loves a good challenge, hates to give up and is like a puppy with a bone when I have an instinct about something.

If you could go back in time for one day, where would you go?

I’d go back a few years and spend a day with my great aunt Maureen – my grandmother’s sister. I grew up down the Jersey shore with her nearby. She taught me how to play poker and gave me a philosophy of life: “some days you are the pigeon and some days you are the statue.”

What is the one word you would use to define yourself? What is the one word others would use to define you?

I think I’m inquisitive.

Some people would say I’m a busybody.

What is your motto?

I borrowed my great aunt Maureen’s motto: “If you can’t change the direction of the wind, adjust your sails.”

What is your most treasured possession?

It’s a toss-up between my beloved Chevy Metro – 100,000 plus miles that has seen me through some challenging scrapes – and a ceramic lamp that my aunt Maureen gave me just before she passed away. I have it sitting in my living room now.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Up to this point in my life, I’d say the Windjammer restaurant and my theme food menus which I coordinate with the Etonville Little Theatre productions. A close second would be getting and keeping Bill’s interest…

Business is humming at Dodie O'Dell's Windjammer Restaurant, where she offers theme menus connected to the Etonville Little Theatre’s amateur productions. This June, the theatre is collaborating with the neighboring Creston Players to stage Bye Bye Birdie under the stars—their first musical! There's a contest in the play to pick a fan to receive rock idol Conrad Birdie's last kiss before he ships off for the Army, so Dodie plans a contest to pick the food for a pre-show picnic.

But before the show opens, Ruby, the rehearsal accompanist, is found dead in her car. Why would anyone murder the crusty old gal who loved to sneak a smoke and a nip between wisecracks? Once again, the resourceful restaurant manager must play the part of amateur sleuth, accompanied by Police Chief Bill Thompson, who also happens to be her beau. Confronted with a chorus of suspects, she'll need to stay composed to catch the killer—or it'll be bye bye Dodie…
