Murder at Archly Manor

(High Society Lady Detective Series)

by Sara Rosett

1.What is your current state of mind?

Determined. I’m set on making my own way in the world and will do whatever I have to. My problem has been that even though I’m willing to work, no one wants to hire me. But I’m not giving up. I’ll keep at it until my last shilling is gone…and the way things are going that isn’t far off.

2. What you do/will like best about the other main character(s)?

I love my cousin Gwen’s sweet, trusting nature—although sometimes I think she’s a bit too trusting. My other cousin, Violet, is like a fireworks explosion—all bright and energetic. She can be splendid fun. It can be a little exhausting too, if I’m completely honest.

Then there’s Jasper. I’ve known him for ages and ages. He’s like a brother to me. I can always count on him, and he makes me laugh, which has been a very good thing lately. Oh, and he takes me to the Savoy for tea, which is a very nice thing to do for a single girl who’s crisscrossing London everyday while looking for a job. Peach Melba is always welcome!

3. What is in your refrigerator right now? On your bedroom floor? On your nightstand? In your garbage can?

Actually, to be perfectly honest, I don’t have a refrigerator. I’m currently living in a pokey attic room at a London boarding house while I look for a job. My landlady provides a breakfast, but my other meals are usually three-penny buns and tea. My bedroom floor is bare except for a thin rug. I’m rather slapdash in some areas of my life, but I’d never leave my clothes lying around, especially the gorgeous hand-me-down frocks from my cousin Gwen. The current day’s newspaper is on my nightstand. I pore over the “Positions Available” section each night, then make a plan of attack for the next day. And my rubbish contains the old newspapers and the core of an apple I splurged on today. Yes, being a working girl—or attempting to be one—isn’t quite the glamorous life I thought it would be, but I’m not about to give up.

4. What is your motto?

Push forward. If I just keep going something’s bound to turn up.

5. What is your most treasured possession?

My mum’s opera length pearls. When she passed away, Father gave them to me, and I’ll never part with them no matter how grim things get. They’re the one thing I’ll never sell.

A high-society murder. A spirited lady detective. Can she out-class the killer before an innocent person takes the fall?

London, 1923. Olive Belgrave needs a job. Despite her aristocratic upbringing, she’s penniless. Determined to support herself, she jumps at an unconventional job—looking into the background of her cousin’s fiancĂ©, Alfred. He burst into the upper crust world of London’s high society, but his answers to questions about his past are decidedly vague.

Before Olive can gather more than the basics, a murder occurs at a posh party. Suddenly, every Bright Young Person in attendance is a suspect, and Olive must race to find the culprit because a sly murderer is determined to make sure Olive’s first case is her last.
