Author Interview

Who is your intended audience and why should they read your book?

Readers who enjoy traditional and cozy mysteries are the audience for the book. The book features Britta Johnston a floral designer who crafts magnificent European-style flowers at her shop Blooma. She ends up stumbling upon a murder and has to piece together who the killer is while creating beautiful flower arrangements and stunning centerpieces. Each book in the series has real tips for preserving and styling flowers.

How did you come up with the title of your book or series?

The series is set in Portland, Oregon also known as the Rose City so it was a natural fit to call the series The Rose City Mysteries. In terms of the title for this book, my editor and I were going back and forth on ideas and couldn’t come up with anything that felt right. He emailed me at midnight on Friday, saying that the perfect title, Violet Tendencies, had popped in his head. It was a twist of fate because earlier that day I had written a scene where Britta was weaving together strands of violets.

Who is your favorite character from your book and why?

I love Britta’s Aunt Elin. She’s originally from Sweden and brought her unique eye for flower designs to Portland. Elin isn’t a typical florist, she believes that flowers are art and they’re also meant to be shared. She always has a fresh bunch of garden roses on her kitchen table. The inspiration for Elin came from my childhood best friend. Her mom was Swedish and introduced me to the most delicious Swedish pancakes with lingonberry jam and family customs like lighting real candles on the Christmas tree. Whenever I visited their house they would always have flowers on the table. It didn’t matter if it was a holiday or special occasion, flowers were part of their everyday experience. I love getting to write that idea into the series.

If you could change ONE thing about your novel, what would it be?  Why?

I wish I had even more space in the book to share everything that I’ve learned in my research. So many florists have opened their doors to me and have given me a look into the world of flower design. I weave in a lot of what I’ve learned into the books, but there’s so much more I want to share. Prior to writing the series, I had no idea how much thought and consideration goes into creating a beautiful bouquet.

Do you have any unique talents or hobbies?

My grandfather owned a large urban garden, so my childhood summers were spent traipsing through rows and rows of corn and picking sweet cherry tomatoes off the vine. He taught me so much about the cycles and seasons of gardening. I credit my green thumb to him. My grandmother would hand me a pair of garden shears and have me go pick roses to take home. Now as an adult my yard and deck are lush with hand-grown herbs, veggies, and of course a plethora of roses.

How can we contact you or find out more about your books?

love connecting with readers in person and online. You can find me at my website: There are links to all of my social media accounts at my website and I’ve also recently launched a YouTube Channel where I’m sharing interviews with real florists, answer reader questions, and sharing tips on writing.

What can readers who enjoy your book do to help make it successful?

I always try to think of fun ways to connect with readers and one thing that has been so wonderful to see is readers who have created their own flower designs after reading the series. I would love it if readers would post a photo of a handmade bouquet and tag me!

Do you have any tips for readers or advice for other writers trying to get published?

Start small. I think many new writers get easily intimidated with the idea of writing an 80,000 word manuscript. Often that leads them to give up their dream. I recommend starting small. Write an article for a community newspaper, a school newspaper, a magazine, even a newsletter or a guest blog. Write about something that interests you and that you’re passionate about. Seeing your work published in a local newspaper or magazine is a huge reward and a great first step in building a long-term writing career.

Is there anything else you’d like to say?

Thanks so much for having me as a guest today!

Who could object to a flower festival?

Britta Johnston and her aunt Elin are delighted that their Portland floral boutique is part of the city’s Rose Festival, which draws thousands to the Pacific Northwest for dragon boat races, fireworks, and other attractions—capped off by a big parade. They’re building a float that’s sure to rock the judge’s boat . . . until a gang of angry protestors shows up. The group, who call themselves Dark Fusion, are decidedly not into flower power, and they want to take down the system . . . including the upcoming extravaganza.

Then their leader is strangled with a garland of violets—and Britta finds the body. With tensions running high and so much at stake, there are plenty of suspects, from the Grand Marshal to a longtime volunteer to a former Rose Queen. But before Britta and Elin can stem the violence, the case is going to get even more explosive . . .
