Better Than Nun
(A Giulia Driscoll Mystery)

Author Interview

How did you come up with the title of your book or series? —The main character of the series is Giulia Driscoll, an ex-nun. Since my husband loves puns, I thought I’d try “nun puns” for the titles. All of the books in the rebooted series have “nun” in the title. (The original series was with a different publisher and we went with “habit” and “veil” titles.) Who is your favorite character from your book and why? —Sidney, the ever-perky Christmas elf, has always been my favorite character. She’s the perfect foil for Giulia, who is a wee bit tightly wound. I love Sidney’s sometimes-goofy dialogue and also when she gets up in arms as a nature warrior. I look forward to her daughter’s appearance in a book, since I don’t know if she’ll be a Sidney clone or the opposite. Give us an interesting fun fact or a few about your book or series: What other books are similar to your own? What makes them alike? —Giulia, my sleuth, has a pet chameleon given to her by a grateful client. Frank, her husband, likes to send her doctored photos of it dressed as cartoon characters or turned into lunch. —My books are light and funny. I write beach reads for my readers to escape with for a few hours. Cozies are usually like that. Other Henery Press books, Crooked Lane books, and Berkley cozies are all in the same vein. Do you have any unique talents or hobbies? —I make amigurumi, those little stuffies crocheted in the round. I made a complete set of the Firefly cast as a wedding present for a fellow author’s wedding. How can we contact you or find out more about your books? —I’m in all the usual places on the internet: Facebook: Twitter: @AliceLoweecey Goodreads: My website: My Amazon page: What can we expect from you in the future? —I’m writing the novel I’ve been wanting to write for years. It’s the Oresteia set in a modern-day traveling carnival. Lest anyone think ancient Greek drama is a snoozefest, this book is definitely rated R! It has sex, drugs, murder, backstabbing business deals, and possibly the most dysfunctional family in literature. I’m having a blast writing it. What can readers who enjoy your book do to help make it successful? —Reviews! Pretty please and thank you! A sentence or two is all that’s needed. When a book reaches 50 reviews, Amazon’s magic algorithm kicks in and it gets pictured in the “If you liked [X] book, you’ll like [the Giulia books].” Do you have any tips for readers or advice for other writers trying to get published? —Treat writing like a business. Try to write every day. (I know about the advice to write every single day, but with a Day Job and other RL commitments, that’s not always possible.) Find good beta readers. By “good” I mean other writers who aren’t your friends and family, and who will tell you what might need fixing. Connect with other writers online. Devlop your craft. Learn the art of writing a compelling query and a concise synopsis. Develop rhino hide, because you’re going to get rejections. I’ve had 12 books published and received hundreds of rejections. It’s part of the business. And remember: thousands of people talk about writing a book, but very few keep working at it to The End. Never give up! Never Surrender!

Ghosts for Mardi Gras!
Giulia Driscoll used to say running a detective agency was the busiest job she’d ever had. Then the ghosts showed up, and she figured now she’s the busiest ever. This of course challenged the Universe to say, “Hold my beer.”
Today she’s running the agency, sleuthing on behalf of the ghosts, and being the mother of a two-month-old. At last she understands those 5-Hour Energy commercials.
The Universe then dropped two clients in her lap for Mardi Gras: a family greedy to find hidden money and the son of her least-favorite person, Ken Kanning of The Scoop. The positive: a date night! The not-so-positive: it’s a working date night. Driscoll Investigations is joining the big Mardi Gras costume charity gala to search for potential thieves. Kanning Junior will be at the party showing off his tame ghost.
The Scoop, a few hundred drunk revelers, a mercenary family, and a ghost who isn’t as tame as the kid thinks. What could possibly go wrong?
Did someone just hear the Universe say, “Hold my beer”?

About the Author

Alice Loweecey is a baker of brownies and tormenter of characters, Alice Loweecey recently celebrated her thirtieth year outside the convent. She grew up watching Hammer horror films and Scooby-Doo mysteries, which explains a whole lot. When she’s not creating trouble for her sleuth Giulia Driscoll or inspiring nightmares as her alter-ego Kate Morgan, she can be found growing her own vegetables (in summer) and cooking with them (the rest of the year).
