What inspired you to write this book?
It was legitimately a dream I had when waking up one morning, actually. I was laying there and I dreamt I was Miri and the dream lasted all the way up to the point the (at the time) unnamed hero said it was two o’clock in the morning. (You’ll have to read the book if you want to know what that means! I’m not giving anything away!)
In the dream, the hero wasn’t really all that cohesive looks-wise. I mean Miri was strong, and clear as day to me with her red hair and fair skin, and her light blue eyes. However, the hero wasn’t as striking as Ka’ron – who I put on the cover. I knew I wanted to use Hayley Stavenger almost right away as the female lead for the cover and I sort of pictured the hero as a white guy in the beginning but I was stuck and I didn’t know why. My husband, who is black, asked me “Why not make this guy black? You’ve never really done that before.” and it was one of those perfect shining moments of creative magic that goes on inside your brain. I pictured the hero as such and literally everything about the rest of the story snapped into place. Like everything. I pictured Ka’ron as Kavion immediately, the name came to me (which isn’t a stretch, I know) and the character’s entire back story but I was scared. I’d never written a hero of color before and with everything going on regarding race relations lately, it was more than a bit daunting. Ka’ron was gracious enough to sit with me for long hours talking candidly about life. My husband helped quite a bit, too. I think between the three of us we did the character of Kavion some justice and I did put this book through several sensitivity betas who assured me they loved every minute of it, but as you can probably tell, I am really nervous about how it will be received by the rest of the world. I don’t want to hurt or offend anyone but I do want more stories like this one to be told.
