Come on a journey.

The town of Jack's Bay, in northern Ontario, Canada, straddles cottage country and city living, and does it well.

But more importantly, it's a strong community. Home to a group of men that have served together in the army reserve. Brothers, with an unbreakable bond, as well as determined women.

Friends and army reserve brothers to these men of Jack's Bay are the men of Golden, British Columbia. A fictional town, with quirky characters set in the Rocky Mountain trench, life is different in the mountains. Yet family, brotherhood and love...are the same.

Come meet the cowboy, the ex-hockey player, the dark-net computer genius, and the band of Canadian military reservists who served together, and the strong women they fall in love with.

What I love about Christmas.

Oh, what’s not to love? I think I pretty much love every aspect of it. Including the busyness, the shopping, the crowds. It's all a part of this crazy celebration called Christmas.

Oh come on. Isn't there one thing about you don't like?

Yep, you got me. I did come up with one thing. It's way too short.

What was the earliest you ever celebrated Christmas?

A couple of years ago, I put up my two trees (and my place isn't that big), in October. Yes, October. I gloried in it. The only issue was that the lights on one section of one of the pre-lit trees burned out, I think from all the duty they had to perform. It all worked out okay, though. I couldn't get it to work again, and I wasn't doing no check all the bulbs thing (honestly, because I'm not sure it would work), so I just threaded another string of lights in. Bingo. It's all good.

What kind of tree do you have?

I love real trees. And where I live, I can’t have one. I’m a great recycler/rescuer though, so one tree is a half-size baby that I perch on top of my freestanding fireplace mantle, a tree I rescued from an ignominious end. (Let’s just say someone was cleaning out their garage or something in summer in cottage country two years ago, and I found this baby beaut out by the side of the road. He/she's mine, now, and we’re good. We’re a thing, lol.)

So yeah. Tree number one is a rescue. :)

My second tree also has a story. I used to be all into everything natural (still am, kind of) but this tree is extremely thin-I call it my pencil tree-and it’s totally artificial. In fact, it’s needles are a pale goldy-silver.

Well, it’s stunning. It’s already pretty, but when the little, yellow-hued warm white lights are on—wow. It’s like a flash of pristine, 24 karat gold in the room. I really love it.

And the best thing about it all? I got it on sale, quite unexpectedly.

Twiggy’s lived with me ever since, and oh yeah. We’re a thing too.

How many Christmas trees would you like to have?

One of my besties recently teased me that I’ll end with six or seven, in my relatively, currently small space. That idea totally latched onto my heart. So let’s just say—six or seven will one day—not that far off in the distant future either—be the minimum. LOL.

And yes. I mean full-sized ones. Not teensy little 6 inch ones. Though they’re welcome too.

Any more on Christmas decorations/designs?

My latest love, other than RED EVERYTHING (which has always been a constant in my life, except for my monotone ‘black is slimming’ phase LOL—thankfully, I'm over that and am doing COLOUR now again), is buffalo plaid.

I love, love, LOVE buffalo plaid! For me, it epitomizes Christmas.

Buffalo plaid, if you’re not aware of the term (I just learned it) is a red and black check, often in big squares, but any size of check is termed buffalo plaid. This design means Christmas to me.

And especially, a Canadian Christmas. A northern Christmas.

I love Toronto, and I also love northern Ontario. Any type of Canadiana rocks my world. Last year I treated myself to two fake fur pillow covers done in a fake grey fox. *happy sighs* I love the idea of being snowed in at a cabin, and one of my writing besties has been teasing me with thoughts of a winter writing retreat.

I told her—don’t start, lol.

And in one of my Christmas books—It Started With A Candy Cane—set in Jack’s Bay, one of my fictitious towns up north—there's a café that themes all of its food with Canadiana terms. They have Moose-poo Shortbread (they’re chocolate chips), Lynx Links (breakfast sausages), and Beaver Scream Nog. More menu titles to come in future books—‘cause it’s fun.

One fantasy I have is of owning a cabin or cottage up north, and decorating it ALL in Canadiana, with pine and lake motifs. I love mugs with bears or moose on them.

But, I digress. We were talking about Christmas, right?

Okay, you say you love Christmas. But why exactly?

I actually gave this some serious thought, a couple of years ago, because I know it isn’t a past memory, per se. Our family actually didn't celebrate Christmas very much. Though I do remember the interplay, on the ceiling, of the shadowy outlines of pine needles and dashes of colour from the tree lights, and the real pine we always got. That was unique, and magical. It’s a memory and a visual I cherish, that’s burned into my memory.

I do believe it's the message. The message that everyone is important. No matter how humble, or conversely (let’s not be reverse snobs)—no matter how rich. Every single person matters, and what they want matters.

It’s a whole thing about dreams are important, I think. That’s what appeals to me. In whatever circumstances we find ourselves in some years, often humble. Either financially, or emotionally. In some way.

And that sometime, if we look with the right eyes, we’ll see that much of what we want has already come true, and that we have been given gifts, specially tailored to us. Ones that are rather large, and that are directly from the list our heart has penned, in its deepest thoughts.

I love the message of Christmas, deeply. And I’m grateful it comes around, every year.
