Hey cute-tea! Welcome to the 2020 Sweet Southern Reading Challenge hosted here at Readeropolis. The challenge will run from January 1 to December 31, 2020. You can join at any time.

The overall goal of the reading challenge is to read written works of fiction primarily set in the southern United States (aka the American South or the South).

For this challenge, the South is defined as the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.*

There are five reading levels for this challenge.
  • One Glass of Sweet Tea: Read 1 - 3 Books
  • Two Glasses of Sweet Tea: Read 4 - 6 Books
  • Three Glasses of Sweet Tea: Read 7 - 9 Books
  • A Pitcher of Sweet Tea: Read 10 - 12 Books
  • A Gallon Glass of Sweet Tea: Read 13 or More Books

* These are states where when you ask for sweet ice tea, it is served already sweetened, not unsweetened with packets of sweetener on the side. 😀

How to participate in the Sweet Southern RC:

1. "FIXIN' TO": Think about some books you'd like to read (or maybe re-read) this year.

Your goal can be one book, twelve books, or even some short stories. It's up to you! All book formats are welcome (paper, audio, electronic, graphic novels/manga).

Need some inspiration? Check out this list of lists for book suggestions.

[Fixin' to means that you are about to do something.]

2. "I DO DECLARE": Write a blog post or social media post to tell us that you are joining the Sweet Southern Reading Challenge.

You can announce your participation on your blog, favorite social network, and/or a bookish site on the 'net. Make sure to link to this blog post to spread the word. Please leave your announcement link in the comments section of this blog post. We'd love to get a sneak peek of the books you want to read for this challenge.

[Misused here. I do declare is an exclamation of surprise, incredulity, or vexation. Ex. Well I do declare… this hardcover book is awfully expensive.]

3. "HOLLER": Use the hashtag #SweetSouthernRC.

Please use the hashtag #SweetSouthernRC when posting about the challenge so we can find your posts around the 'net. There will be optional monthly check-ins. You do not have to post reviews (though authors would really appreciate it if you did).

[To holler is to let the other person know something. Ex. Holler at me when you are ready to go to the library.]

Feel free to use the challenge image in your announcement post and social media posts to help spread the word. Please link back to this blog.

Guidelines for the Challenge:

  • Please focus on works that are Southern in feeling. I'll leave it for you to decide what that means. I won't throw a hissy fit about specifics, just please keep in mind the South is more than just an area on a map.
  • The challenge will run from January 1 to December 31, 2020.
  • Books must be started on or after January 1 to count.
  • There are five reading levels. You can move up or down in level, if needed.
  • All book formats are allowed.
  • Books can cross over to other challenges in which you are participating.
  • Re-reads are okay.
