The Eye of Ra
by Ben Gartner

GENRE:   Middle Grade

BLURB:

Exploring a mysterious cave in the mountains behind their house, John and his sister Sarah are shocked to discover they’ve time traveled to ancient Egypt!

Now they must work together to find a way back home from an ancient civilization of golden desert sand and a towering new pyramid, without parents to save them. The adventures abound—cobras, scorpions, a tomb robber, and more! The two kids have to trust each other, make friends who can help, and survive the challenges thrown at them . . . or be stuck in ancient Egypt forever.

For readers graduating from the Magic Treehouse series and ready for intense action, dive into this middle grade novel rich with meticulous historical detail.

EXCERPT:

“Sarah, where are we?” John asked, frozen in place despite the heat. In front of them was a vast ocean of sand as far as the eye could see. It rolled in carved waves, dunes that sparkled in the low-slanting rays of the sun.

Dunes? John thought.

Sarah staggered forward, shielding her eyes from the glare. “I—I—”

It was rare for her to be speechless. And it was kind of spooky, her not saying anything and stepping forward with the jerky movements of a zombie.

“Are you okay?” John followed his sister out into the sand, suddenly very afraid to be even a foot away from her.

“Woo-hoo!” she shouted, jumping into the air in her signature move, arms shooting up in a V shape.

“You’re excited about this?” John snapped. “Sarah, how are we in a desert all of a sudden? Where’s the mountain? The cave?” The incredible moment tickled at his brain, and he couldn’t put two and two together. “Am I dreaming?”

“Yeah,” Sarah said. “Dreaming. We must be dreaming. Together.” She knelt into the sand, picked up a handful, and let it drain out of her fist. “This feels pretty real to me.” She turned around to John as she said it, so he could see the roll of her eyes.

“How could we be in the mountains in one moment and then . . .” He trailed off, watching Sarah’s eyes go up and her head tilt back, taking in something very large behind him. John wasn’t sure he wanted to turn around.

Sarah laughed, her face turned toward the sky, her hand covering her mouth. “So.” She took a full breath. “Cool!”

The curiosity got the better of him. John held his breath and rotated on his heels in the sand. He’d been stunned by the vast golden dunes, but what he saw now made him squeak out a chortle of disbelief.

“What—? How—? Is that—?” John stammered. His finger reached out, pointing to the scene as if maybe he could poke it, like it was a postcard of a giant pyramid and not a real one.

AUTHOR Interview:

Who is your intended audience and why should they read your book?
THE EYE OF RA, technically, is marketed as a middle grade book for ages 8-12, but I’ve had reviewers tell me things like: “It was a great read for the age group, but I think many adults could use the life lessons from this book too. I swear, I could barely put it down.” I think anyone interested in a fun action story with some interesting facts about ancient Egypt sprinkled throughout would be a good candidate to enjoy THE EYE OF RA.

Tell us a little bit about your cover art. Who designed it? Why did you go with that particular image?
I LOVE my cover. The custom illustration is just beautiful. It’s eye-catching, it evokes mystery and intrigue, and it does a great job of peppering in elements from the story without giving anything away. Anne Glenn from http://anneglenndesign.co.uk/ was the illustrator and she was wonderful to work with.

What other books are similar to your own? What makes them alike?
THE EYE OF RA is for graduates of the Magic Tree House series. My sons and I devoured those books and as they aged, we were looking for something similar but for older kids (MTH are chapter books for 6-8-ish whereas RA is for ~8-12). I’m told we did a pretty good job at hitting that sweet spot, as summarized by one 10 year old book blogger: “This book was awesome!” ☺

How can we contact you or find out more about your books?
My website is http://bengartner.com/ and I’m active on Twitter @bgartnerwriting. I love hearing from readers – it provides fuel for creativity! And THE EYE OF RA is available wherever books are sold. Here’s a link to a one-stop shop for the ebook version: https://books2read.com/the-eye-of-ra-ben-gartner. And to support your local bookseller, you can find it on indiebound (paperbacks sold everywhere too): https://www.indiebound.org/book/9781734155211

What can we expect from you in the future?
When we started out writing THE EYE OF RA, we didn’t think past it. But the reception has been so warm and inviting, that I can’t help but think of where to take John and Sarah next. We’ll see!

What can readers who enjoy your book do to help make it successful?
Tell other kids and parents about it! Ask for it at your local library or school library or local bookstore. Post reviews and let me know that you want more, so I’ll feel compelled not to let you down… ;)

Do you have any tips for readers or advice for other writers trying to get published?
Is writing FUN for you? If you answer “yes” to that question, then never forget that you’re doing it for the JOY of it. It doesn’t have to be perfect (nothing ever is!). Who cares if it makes it big or not, as long as you’re having fun. And if it stops being fun, well, then, maybe you should consider a different hobby.

Is there anything else you’d like to say?
Kids in this age group are in a time of profound development, both physically and emotionally. Their brains are exploding with new ideas. I remember, as a kid, being whisked wholesale into imaginative worlds where I could play out different lives, different fears, successes, and challenges. I hope that my books spur a bit of that same creativity in young minds.
