Little Milly and the Great Lakes
by Kelly McInenly

GENRE: Children's

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Kelly knew Little Milly Lake as Grandma Mill McInenly. The usually serious Mildred would occasionally surprise her granddaughter with tales of the fun and mischief that she and her five older sisters found growing up in the Maritimes in the early 1900s. The combination of little money or supervision, and a notoriously grumpy father, made for simple stories with just the right blend of silly and sweet.Little Milly and the Great Lakes is Kelly's first creative writing endeavor... she has been distracted by Little Mateo and Little Lucas.
Get silly with Milly on her other adventures...Bess and the Boil, Marj and the Medal, and Peg and the Party Line.
EXCERPT:
Early one morning, the gulls were still sleeping,
The Sergeant was out, and the girls’ tea was steeping,
When from the washroom came an animal’s howl:
Bess flung the door open, her rump in a towel,
“There’s a boil on my bottom and boy does it hurt!”
Marj warned, “If Pa finds out there will be no dessert!”
AUTHOR Interview:
How did you come up with the title of your series?
The Little Milly and the Great Lakes series is based on the childhood of my grandmother – Mildred McInenly. She was called ‘Little Milly’ as a child (impossible to imagine given what a prim and proper gran she was). I wanted to write the books to give young girls examples of kids being strong and having fun, without being overly sassy, weird or rude. My grandmother’s maiden name was Lake, so ‘the Great Lakes’ seemed to be the prefect moniker for Little Milly’s gaggle of feisty sisters and a nod to the epic adventures they had together.
Tell us a little bit about your cover art. Who designed it? Why did you go with that particular image?
Sakshi Mangal illustrated the entire Little Milly series. I was drawn to her portfolio
immediately as the bold colours and scribbles matched the spritely nature of the Lake girls. My first thought was ‘I would love to decorate my kids’ rooms entirely with her art’, so I engaged her immediately as my illustrator. Check out her body of work at Sakshi's Illustrations …a welcome dose of whimsy and happiness!
Do you have any unique talents or hobbies?
Like the Lake sisters, I enjoy running, climbing and the outdoors. I am a long-distance runner and train regularly with my son who has taken up the sport as well. I hope to run the Boston Marathon a second time with him at my side. I love hiking and have made it as high as Mount Everest Base Camp (the altitude gave me never-ending hiccups!). I have spent 21+ days in the wilderness three times on Outward Bound expeditions in Pukaskwa National Park in Northern Ontario, Mount Assiniboine British Columbia and the Australian Rainforest.
What can we expect from you in the future?
Three of the Lakes sisters have not shared their stories yet, so I am working away on Books 4-6 – Ene and the Ivy, Flo and the Fishermen and Milly and the Mail. Little Milly fans may even find their faces within the illustrations in Books 4-6 (fun fact: there is a bird hidden on every page in the Little Milly series)
I am also co-authoring a business book for young people with my longtime friend and co-worker, Julien Leblanc. After years of on-boarding new graduates and coaching executives, Julien noticed a consistent and concerning gap between academic achievement and organizational effectiveness. While academic pedigree provides a solid foundation, that foundation may be too hard, lacking the soft skills that enable agility, creativity and, ultimately, success. Foundation Before Creation is our attempt to bridge the divide between academia and reality, with a book that both in its construct (slim field guide) and its content (storytelling) demonstrates the difference.
What can readers who enjoy your book do to help make it successful?
Rating and/or writing a review of Little Milly is the best way you can help her get noticed… you can even make a fun activity of it with your kids. I would love to see some reviews in their own words (misspellings and all!).
