The Genre Switch of WHAT ARE FRIENDS FOR?

When I look back at the making of WHAT ARE FRIENDS FOR?, I feel like laughing. This book actually started off as a YA Urban Fantasy book, if you can believe it. Yeah, a YA Contemporary Romance started off as Urban Fantasy. Insane. But I can explain, I swear.

I wrote the first draft of Remi and Elijah’s story (then a Fantasy novel) in April of 2019. It was terrible. I should preface that I am very bad at writing Fantasy. My stories ultimately are super-duper heavy on the romance but light on the Fantasy elements, so I know someone who loved the Fantasy genre would never be fully satisfied with my stories. That’s what clued me in originally that Elijah and Remi’s story really needed to be transferred into a different genre. A different genre would’ve done them justice for sure. I’d previously written one other YA Contemporary Romance novel and actually queried it, but at this point I so wasn’t sold that the contemporary world was for me. Sure, that was my favorite genre to read, but to write it? Could I do it?

(Spoiler alert: I could. And I fell in love with writing this genre.)

There’s something so wildly romantic about crafting someone else’s love story. Weaving together the meet-cutes, the first touches, first kisses—it makes my heart just melt. The matchmaker in me had a field day with Elijah and Remi. Two best friends thrown into an awkward situation is the perfect recipe for a good book, a book I’d definitely want to read. And as a writer, you’re constantly being told “write the book you want to read.” So I did! I took my beloved Remi and Elijah from that Urban Fantasy and threw them into the contemporary world, gave them in real-life issues and kept their lives totally unmagical.

Until they share a passionate kiss at a party, and then those magical sparks really do fly.

And now, I can’t imagine in writing in a different genre. Sure, I’ll dabble in my Fantasy worlds here and there, just to keep my brain fresh, but YA Contemporary Romance definitely stole my heart. It was love at first sight and there’s no going back.

What Are Friends For?
By Sarah Sutton

A close, easygoing friendship can all change with just one kiss. Seventeen-year-old Remi Beaufort learns this the hard way when she plays a blindfolded kissing game at a party.

She thinks she’s kissing Jeremy, the totally hot basketball player she’s been crushing on. And the kiss…it’s amazing. Heart-stopping, world-changing, toe-curling. The kiss makes her forget about her overbearing mother, the next-door neighbor’s drama, and the probability that she’ll fail her senior year. The best kiss of her life makes all that fall away.

Until her blindfold falls off, and she realizes that instead of kissing her crush, she’s kissing Elijah, her best friend since third grade.

Though she manages to convince Elijah that he was kissing his girlfriend, Remi can’t get the thought of his lips on hers out of her head. As things between them grow more and more complicated—because it turns out her fantasizing about his mouth is more of a problem than it sounds—Remi has to make a choice: does she live the rest of her life loving her best friend in secret? Or does she tell the truth and risk ruining their friendship forever?

Heart-melting and romantic, What Are Friends For? is a swoon-worthy best-friends-to-lovers story that will leave you crushing hard.
