Goddess Fish Promotions has organized a Virtual Book Tour for THE DESCENDANT by Melissa Riddell and it stops at Readeropolis with an author interview. The sci-fy romance is available now from DLG Publishing Partners.

The Descendant
by Melissa Riddell

GENRE:   Sci-Fy Romance

She wants her world back; he wants her heart.

Tilly Morgan and her four-legged companion, Kodiak, are just trying to survive the alien arrival. Two years ago, the visitors unleashed devastation—a world-wide EMP followed by a deadly virus that wiped out more than half of humanity.

Traversing the lonely landscape, she runs into an alien on patrol with one order: eradicate all human life. A mysterious, dark-haired stranger named Jareth comes to her aid, and she reluctantly allows him to join her quest to find her sister. He even persuades her to let the damaged alien tag along against her better judgment.

As her group travels the desolate world and inches closer to her goal, she’s forced to examine her unwanted feelings for Jareth and come to terms with her heart, even if the truth threatens to destroy her and everything she’s come to believe.

Walking down a long, metallic corridor, the hall opens, and I see people sitting at terminals or standing on discs.

Visual readouts project holographic images at the stations. Some of the crew wear visors over their eyes and move gloved hands to swipe at virtual images of the triangular ship and the solar system. When Eva passes their stations, several follow the procession with guarded faces.

The back of a chair rests in the middle of the spacious room. Before the seat is an enormous window that looks out into space.

One soft, polished boot dangles over the side of the chair. Long, deft fingers drum a beat on the black coat that covers the knee.

Freaking, evil granny. I should’ve known she wouldn’t keep her nose out of my business.

In slow motion, the chair swivels in my direction.

I want to crawl and hide. Instead, I stand and stare like the idiot I am.

AUTHOR Interview:

Who is your intended audience and why should they read your book?

My intended audience is anyone who enjoys a slow-burn, complicated romance. Even though it’s technically a sci-fi romance, I’ve converted a lot of readers who don’t usually enjoy sci-fi or apocalyptic stories. The Descendant focuses on the characters and their growth first, and the setting is secondary.

How did you come up with the title of your book or series?

The title took a day or two. Each book in the Baltin Trilogy, including books 1 and 2 (The Betrayer and The Redeemer) means more than the reader thinks at first glance. It’s layered and becomes clearer at the end of each story. The titles convey a bit of the theme, especially in the subsequent novels. I can’t say much more than this without spoilers. Haha.
The series name, Savage Worlds, is based on my future plans. Eventually, there will be three separate trilogies and prequels for the Baltins, the Henokans, and Humans, which covers all three planets: hence the Savage Worlds series title.

Tell us a little bit about your cover art. Who designed it? Why did you go with that particular image?

The publisher contracted the artwork, which was created by Wren Taylor Cover Designs, but they included me in its creation. I didn’t like the original couple at the top, so I sent it back with who I thought would fit my story much better. I absolutely LOVED the cover they sent back to me. I think the artist did an amazing job combining the colors, Tilly and Jareth, and the dog, Kodiak, into a beautiful scene. It gets a lot of compliments!

Who is your favorite character from your book and why?

You’d think the main character, Tilly would be my favorite, right? Nope, Jareth is. Why? Because he’s kind of shady, sexy as heck, and a genius. So, yeahhhh…what can I say? I enjoy characters with complicated pasts and complex emotions—I guess that’s why I wrote him that way.

How about your least favorite character? What makes them less appealing to you?

Oh, I hate Jim. The reader will be introduced to him about midway or so, and they’ll understand that hatred once they see what he does.

Give us an interesting fun fact or a few about your book or series:

Jareth’s name came from David Bowie’s character in the Labyrinth. He also sports a cute little slanted tooth, just like David Bowie, too. 😉 Tilly’s last name of Morgan was inspired by Dexter Morgan from Dexter. I still crack myself up over that one.

What other books are similar to your own? What makes them alike?

Hmm, this is a hard question. I’ve not really read anything like my book, but I’m sure there’s something out there. We writers never really invent new ideas—we just give them fresh voices and a new set of eyes. I’d love to hear if others think it’s similar to something they’ve read.

How can we contact you or find out more about your books?

Oh, I love to hear from readers! My books, whether they’re under this name or my other pen name of Mina Raye, are on my website at I’m most active on Facebook at and twitter at

What can we expect from you in the future?

I’m currently writing Tilly’s prequel, which covers the two years between the electromagnetic pulse, virus, and to the beginning of The Descendant, but I’ll also be releasing a couple of paranormal romances in the fall and winter. Next year, I plan on starting the Henokan Trilogy. It’s going to be a fun ride over the next year.

What can readers who enjoy your book do to help make it successful?

I would love to get honest reviews and Amazon, Bookbub, and/or Goodreads! I mean, I’ll be honest—if I need to trade my soul for a few reviews, I am not above it. As a reader myself, I rely on honest reviews to guide my decision on whether to buy a book, so part of a book’s success is not just a great cover and story, but how many reviews it’s garnered. And the review doesn’t even have to be elaborate—it can be one sentence long. Basically, anything that’ll help the reader decide if it’s something they want to pick up or not.
