How to find time to write as a parent?

This is one I don’t talk about often because I am very private about my family life. However, I think it’s an important conversation for authors to have, especially for those who have had to work around it like I have.

It’s hard. At one point while I was writing my second book, I was working sixty hours a week and coming home to spend time with my family. My offspring have no idea what I do in my spare time, and I definitely don’t need word of it being spread by my local mom’s group (It’s so hard to find a good parent group, by the way).

During those months, I was only writing around 10k a month by sheer, dogged determination. I was using a tablet to write at the time, and would stay up in bed after the house was asleep and just write. There would be nights where I only got five hours of sleep, but I had a dream and a goal, and I was determined to make it happen.

There’s a saying I heard once, and I will probably butcher it here, but here goes: Einstein had just as much time in the day that you do. This was a saying I either saw in a book (or online) about being a writer. The idea here was that you have the same hours in the day as anybody else who has ever accomplished something, and you have to make those hours count.

I sacrifice any free time I can to chase the writer’s dream. I don’t watch shows on Netflix (I am so behind on most of them) and I try not to fall down rabbit holes on the internet. The reason for this is that I consistently make time for my family first, which doesn’t always leave me any excess during the day. All of my personal time is dedicated to what I can produce, and I won’t produce anything if I just get on social media and talk about writing instead of doing it. So that’s the secret; make every second count, and rely on the structure of your day to predict when you can do it.

Right now, I average about three hours a day of writing time. This includes editing, marketing, etc. A good chunk of this time is done while in bed (I get around seven hours of sleep). I work through plot points while doing dishes or driving somewhere. At one point, I remember I was writing character dialogue on my phone while going to the bathroom at work. I would actually have a little bit more time to write right now if not for COVID, because none of the day camps are open and I can’t get a babysitter.

But that’s okay. When you do something you love, you really won’t miss your favorite shows anyway.

When Mike Radley inherited a mysterious old house from a long-lost relative, he wasn't sure what to expect.

He didn't expect a sexual encounter with the nymph in his bathtub.

He really didn't expect to discover a house full of affectionate monsters.

And he definitely didn't expect a pair of witches bent on stealing the home's magic from him.

Welcome to the Radley House. Expect the unexpected.

Disclaimer: This erotic fantasy contains graphic sex scenes with mythological beings.
