Top Five Serial Killer Candidates for Tears of the Wolf
When I first envisioned writing a book about a serial killer, I realized I had only superficial knowledge of this class of criminals. For instance, I did not know that serial killers sometimes worked in pairs. Nice thought, right? I realized before I could create my monster, I had to know more about these walking nightmares. Herewith, in no particular order, were the top five serial killers I looked at as models for my villain in my new book, Tears of the Wolf.
Charles Manson: who does not recoil when they see photos of this killer as a smirking young man? His strange eyes charmed and entranced his followers to murder the rising movie star Sharon Tate, among others. He died at the ripe old age of 83, in prison.
Jeffrey Dahmer: this all American guy had a taste the flesh of 17 young men. He preyed on the fringes of society, looking for the most vulnerable. If you are looking for some new recipes, he would be the guy to contact—except he was murdered in prison.
Dr. Harold Shipman: a British physician, Dr. Shipman cultivated close relationships with his elderly patients. So close, he was able to convince them to sign over all their worldly belongings to him. As soon as the ink was dry, he killed over 200 people before being caught by an undertaker who thought it was unusual that so many little old ladies in his practice had cremation orders signed by the busy Dr. Shipman.
John Wayne Gacy, aka, The Killer Clown: True confession, I have never liked clowns. I don’t find them funny. This guy, in particular, was not funny to his 33+ victims. Why a clown? Seems he was a member of a clown club (who knew?) and performed at parties. His innocuous disguise lulled his potential victims into believing they were safe with him. Moral of that story: Never trust a clown!
Paul John Knowles, The Casanova Killer: Some call him a spree killer, not a serial killer. No matter what category you use, this movie star handsome devil was proficient at his calling. We still don’t know how many people he killed, the estimates range from 20 to 35. When captured, he boasted about his kills. Karma caught up to him when he tried to escape: he was shot dead.
