About Paws for Alarm

Paws for Alarm (A Canine Confections Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
2nd in Series
Publisher: Donelson Press (March 22, 2021)
Digital - Number of Pages - 196

When Samantha relaxes into her new role as a dog mom, finds a circle of friends in her new hometown, and sees her new dog bakery Canine Confections barking up business, she’s thrilled that things are going so well … until she hears a bloodcurdling scream from the pastry shop two doors down and runs over to find a dead body on the floor.

Suddenly Samantha finds herself in a race against time to find not only the thief who is stealing from the upscale shops, but a murderer, too. Samantha’s Lab-Mix Sweet Pea wags her tail through all of the clues, suspects and shenanigans. Both Samantha and Sweet Pea are aided in their amateur investigation by the other shopkeepers on the elegant Worth Avenue, and Samantha finds the suspect list growing at every turn.

To make matters worse, Samantha’s old boyfriend arrives in town, and mysterious people start showing up at the Sophisticated Pet and New Age stores nearby. Samantha soon finds that things are not what they seem, and she must figure out what’s going on—or become the next dead body on a bakery floor.

Includes an original recipe from the world-famous Three Dog Bakery!

Author Interview

Who is your intended audience and why should they read your book?

Great question! While I love reading and writing suspense, psychological thrillers and even horror, the readers for my Canine Confections cozy mystery series are those who enjoy clean reading… no naughty language, sex, or gore. Dogs and pastry play a key role. So does friendship, a teensy bit of romance, and sunshine-y living. What makes it maybe a little different than other cozies that involve bakeries and dogs is that this series is about a DOG bakery (though Samantha the owner plans to add treats for humans in Book 3). The location is sunny Palm Beach, Florida. Sun, sand, fancy shops and mansions, and a cozy cottage on an estate for Samantha and her sweet pooch Sweet Pea (and a cat in Book 2). Readers who think all of this sounds like fun—especially if they have to figure out a mystery and murder amid clues and red herrings—will hopefully enjoy this series.

How did you come up with the title of your book or series?

Because it’s a dog bakery, it needed a series name that showed this clearly, but my initial idea of “Doggy Delectables” didn’t quite fit with the elegant-yet-cozy location of a dog bakery on the swanky Worth Avenue in Palm Beach. And the titles of the books, “Paws for Concern-Book 1,” “Paws for Alarm-Book 2,” and “Paws of Death-Book 3” probably need no explanation.

Tell us a little bit about your cover art. Who designed it? Why did you go with that particular image?

Hannah Linder of Hannah Linder Designs created the covers. I wanted a cheerful look to show that although the titles might be murderously harsh, the stories never veer far from lightness and fun.

Who is your favorite character from your book and why?

Sweet Pea, but because she doesn’t speak beyond the occasional bark and whimper, I’ll choose Bethany. She owns the art gallery next door to Samantha’s dog bakery, and is snippy and sarcastic, which is a lot of fun to write.

How about your least favorite character?  What makes them less appealing to you?

I don’t like the murderers because…they’re murderers. And self-involved. And don’t care who they hurt.

If you could change ONE thing about your novel, what would it be?  Why?

I would want Bethany to swear sometimes.  Because the occasional swear word would probably escape her Chanel-lipstick-ed lips if this weren’t a cozy.

Give us an interesting fun fact or a few about your book or series:

I live near Palm Beach and visit quite frequently.

Three Dog Bakery is the FIRST of the dog bakeries, opened back in 1989, and now has locations and products all over the world and their Master Chef CREATED RECIPES just for my series!

What other books are similar to your own? What makes them alike?

Oh dear, I’m going to get in trouble for this with somebody but honestly, I haven’t read a lot of cozies with bakeries and dogs, but I know they exist. I have read Isis Crawford’s series and mine are a little like hers because she talks about food a lot. Also, my series is similar to the Archy McNally series by Lawrence Sanders and, like his, talks a lot about the wacky Palm Beach community, location and…have I mentioned my series talks about food?

Do you have any unique talents or hobbies?

I don’t know how unique it is, and it’s not a hobby because I do it for a living, but I sing. I’ve sung on stages and studios, and still do. I sang for the “Coca Cola” commercial among other things--I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing  (“in perfect harmony…”). Not the original version, I was still a kid at that time, but an updated version.

How can we contact you or find out more about your books?

What can we expect from you in the future?

Paws of Death, Book 3 in the Canine Confections series is due to release summer of 2021 and a psychological suspense will hopefully be out this year too.

What can readers who enjoy your book do to help make it successful?

Review it, even if a short one or two sentences. Tell others. Share it on their social media and TAG me! Purchase future books in the series. That would be awesome.

Do you have any tips for readers or advice for other writers trying to get published?

Think of your personal desires and goals and think about what works for you when listening to others’ advice, otherwise it’ll make you crazy!

Is there anything else you’d like to say?

I really appreciate that you hosted me here, Readeropolis, and thanks for reading this interview everybody. Now, maybe go give your pet dog or cat a hug for me?
